Should my laptop do better?

Sweetpete:

When the new drivers are loaded, and you've probably re-started your computer, right click on your desk top scroll down to PROPERTIES, once that window has opened select the SETTINGS tab and see at what size (resolution) Windows has set for your monitor (ex. 1024x728). What ever the settings are use these in the Advanced, Options, Graphics section of CIV4 start-up screen. I hope you get the great results that I got.

Sweetpete, you need to upgrade your RAM or the game is going to continue to run like crap. My laptop is much more powerful than yours and I had similar issues when I was trying to play the game with only 512MB of RAM. I upgraded to 2GB and it ran like a chief, pre-v1.52 patch.

The other fixes are crap and you are going to get marginal performance increases at best.

Well thanks for the advise, however i've recieved some mixed ideas on what to do. Some said its my Radeon x300 thats me weak spot, and others said i need more RAM. For now i'll probably wait for the next patch before adding any pc hardwares.

It's absolutely, positively not your videocard. My video card run F.E.A.R. with hardly any problems, but not Civ4? Don't think so. This game is a memory hog and will run like crap with enough of it.

Regarding the patch, the last one was the major one that resolved most of the big issues with the game. Future patches will just be minor fixes and tweaks here and there. You need some memory. I believe you could upgrade to 1-2GB for less than $200. Installation is a piece of cake, even for a novice.

Good luck!

Do you really think that X300 can run FEAR and other modern games with no performance issues?

Well i dont know about FEAR but i have run GTA-san andreas, SW-knights of the old republic, and Call of duty 2, with little or no performance issues. However i dont know it these are in the same graphic class as FEAR and some of the newest games out.

Not sure, but my 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9800 didn't have many issues. Granted, I didn't have the settings cranked up, but they were at a decent level. As I said, he needs memory, first and foremost.
