Show off your Great Generals here!

Mounted units are nice units to try to get really high XPs with. With Flanking I and II and Tactics, mounted units have a 60%-90% chance of withdrawl when losing. So you can fight those 95% battles for more XP (instead of the 99% battles) and have only a 0.5-2% chance of the unit dying. Numidians, cavalry, and gunships are the best for extra withdrawl chance.

Add in mulitple moves per turn and blitz and the XP just roll in. Five times to attack per turn=huge XP

Hmm, I have a question: What do it means with "Free uppgrades - not loosing XP when you uppgrade"?

Not mine, it is from this thread over at Apolyton. The guy also explains how he did it.

To get high points you can also play always war game.
WIth good map setup (and good choking point on forest hill) you can get your units promoted really fast.
I once had elephant with over 200 experience by mostly fighting defensive battles and that was on vanilla civ.

The best I got was 82 XP, and that was with a Great General attached to a Catapault in the Early Industrial Era (I had no Iron, conquering French to get some) and I had another GG on a Trebuchet (I put him on that because the Trebuchet had over 17 XP and I didn't wanna waste it and it was a lucky one. It won a battle with 6% odds without any reloads) but he didn't far after 3 city raiders, leadership and a morale boost.

I also had a conquering Tank which I kept around with he Modern armors until I got a GG to lead it so it didn't lose it's over 20 XP points. Oh well, I guess I'm not that good at making GG's like you guys are. Question: How do you name em?

Yes, you dont lose any Xp when you upgrade your warlord units.

I dont understand... if I take the GG on a unit, it gives him 20 exp, and I then can afford like 3 uppgrades mayby, and then no more, so I dont understand?

He means upgrade as in upgrading a knight to a cavalry. When you upgrade normal units, the XPs drop back down to 10. So if you upgraded a unit with 23 XPs, it would drop back down to 10, but still need to get to 26 XPs for the next promotion. But when you upgrade a GG unit, the XPs stay where they are. What's more, upgrading a GG unit to a better unit is free! You pay nothing to upgrade that horse archer GG to a knight GG.

Sounds like confusion between two terms.

You give a unit a PROMOTION when it reaches a new level (at XP=2, 5, 10, 17, etc.). Promotions include Combat I/II/III/IV/V, Shock, Pinch, Medic I/II/II, etc. Some promotions are only available to Warlord units, no matter how many XPs they have. Some promotions are only available to certain unit types, and some unit types get 'free' promotions (e.g. Blitz on tanks/MA).

You UPGRADE a unit when you change its base type. For instance, once you've researched Iron Working, you can upgrade your Warriors to Swordsmen, and you have to pay a fee for each unit you upgrade. If you upgrade a unit with more than 10XP, it drops back down to 10XP, but its level does not change and it keeps all of its promotions. So, if you upgrade a 19XP maceman to a rifleman, it goes back to 10XP, but it won't achieve another level (and thus another promotion) until it hits 26XP.

For a unit that is led by a Warlord, upgrades (a) don't cost any money, and (b) don't drop the unit back to 10XP. So it's much easier to get highly-promoted Warlords, and they can always be of the best unit type available.

How do you rename a Warlord? Some people asked a very good question and you guys are good at ignoring it. How do you rename them?
Asked and answered in the Newbie Question thread. You rename ANY unit (Warlord or not) by clicking on its name in the detail area (down in the lower-left corner). A pop-up will appear that lets you type in a new name.

Has anyone tried a general with ships yet?
Yes, had a destroyer with combat VI, etc. It was fun but GG's are better spent on land units. I had a GG led infantry unit with over 100 XP and then it died to a gunship...So I just moved on to nukes to finish up the game.:nuke:

Not sure if this counts, as it's not a general attached to a unit, just a regular unit. No idea what level he would be as it stops at L24 it seems for non-general units. This was from a diety/always war/one city challenge game. Was the first to tech to longbows, rifles and then infantry and this guy was promoted through each in turn

Units born in this city started at 37xp due to this (31 specialists, 15 great general instructors)

Lost this game but got a few kills in first

Awesome unit. You should add a GG to his unit though, it unlocks more promotions(combat VI, etc) so your unit could be even stronger...

During a current Multiplayer game, my first Great General was Horatio Nelson. I said to myself, I've GOT to make him a great Admiral. So I put him on a Trireme and proceeded to wreck Rameses II's navy. Once the upgrade to Caravels kicked in, I put him into one of those, his experience is currently at 26, with Combats 1 - 3, Leadership, and Tactics. Waiting on the ground troops to do their job and secure an Iron source so I can upgrade him to a Frigate.

As an aside, does anyone know if Frigates can upgrade to BattleShips, or is it just Destroyers? I know Caravels can upgrade to Submarines.

My GG unit just died:sad:
I had been promoting and upgrading it from warrior to maceman. But i had him stationed in a border city and suddenly Tokugawa declared war on me and before i could send reinforcements he was destroyed....
So next time i'll keep my GG units safe in the middle of my empire until they are needed....

yeah, it was tempting to add a GG to the unit, but I think the secret to getting a well promoted unit is to back it up with a stack of decent units. He was only a defender (never attacked anything even once) and always had 20-30 units stacked with him for the rounds his health was down. I'd bet if he was GG'd and too far above the backup units he'd have been long dead as the combat odds would of still had him fighting at 25% health on the 30+ incoming unit rounds etc. He was eventually taken out by a tank swarm.

Sorry nothing upgrades to Battleships. But yeah, if your Horatio Nelson with Tactics becomes a sub, his withdrawal rate would soon be 100%...
