Sig Length: Blech

It doesn't have to be long in length to be long in characters if you have links.

How about 500 characters, discouting VB code? Is that possible?

Exactly, mine is probably way over, with all the HTML coding and the whatnot to create the codes, and stuff. I am not going to change it for awhile, until I really need to. Of course, since the Model Parliament is going to be moved, likely, my Sig shall shorten.

That is a good idea, discount the coding . . .

So, what's the status on this?
Almost all too long sigs I've seen has been filled with quotes and such. That is, the number of characters wasn't very big, just the visible output, which is what should be important from a mod point of view.

I totally agree here. I don’t see the purpose of limiting the signature length, unless it is to reduce the amount of web-space they take up.

My signature is a perfect example. It has 2689 characters when you include the URL linking, and bold and italic tags. But in reality, when you copy and paste just the visible part of the sig, it is only 227 characters long. I wanted to add to my signature, make the periods in-between the letters (in the last line) to link to pro-democratic sites, too.
But I’m afraid to edit it now, as it will disappear forever if I do. It takes time to collect the different links, to portray an image you want to be remembered for.

My signature also has 3 of its 4 lines reduced in size (simply reducing in size takes up 14 characters) even though it is strictly speaking, a total of 4 lines, it is only equivalent 3.5 using the smaller size.

I think we should go back to the old method, where there was no limit. Most posters had small sigs in line length cause they were mostly URL and Code. Mods could PM users whose Sigs were too long, instead of having many people to pay for a small amount of peoples faults.

Take a look at what some users in the demogame do. They put links to vital threads in their sigs, and sometimes, there's a lot of them. Same for the NES forum, C&C, and Succession Games.

CT, I'm positive yours is over. Now, your sigs seems to be a reasonable length, so I think that it should be displayed characters.

Any answer from anyone who knows about VB3 as to whether it can measure visible characters?

I think it worked well as it was. You can probably add a lot of characters to five lines with small font. How many . can you fit in a line? ;)
Keep the five lines, and you (no specific you) should be ok. :)

Yeah I think thats sensible as people with long sigs can be reported and the present situation punishes more people as we cannot change our sigs since they are over the charactor limit...

i think those of you saying "the old way was good, those that go over can be punished by mods...." are missing the most important factor here. The mods are pretymuch making the decision, and you're trying to validate your point of view by saying the mods can always do more work. lol

i think a char limit makes sense, it maybe should be a bit bigger, not sure how well 800 works for people. making it so that it doesnt count the urls would definetly appease most of those complaining. in that case the char count could probably be brought even lower then 500.
i hate large sigs, especialy on small posts. *tries to remember the size of his own, lol*

The thing is tha it seems to be unfair to punish the majority of posters who follow the sig length rule and may want to use or have a sig that is over the character limit just because there are one or two posters who don't...

It isn't just one or two. Try ten. Every week.

The issue is still under discussion - I'm sure TF will make his decision... eventually.

Ok if its that many would it be possible to tie the sig length to post count? People with less than 50 posts are unlikely to be involved in a huge number of succession games for example. Also it would be hoped that people with other a particular number of posts will have a greater grasp of the rules on sig length.

I've seen posters with 1000s of posts, and still breaking the simple rule...

Like I said, the issue is still under discussion - pls wait awhile.

Ok I will wait quitely then, its not as if I'm planning on changing my sig anytime soon... :)

Hmm, I have been getting all kinds of PMs from Mods, is mine over the 5 line length? I see it as being 1 line at the regular size, and 3 at the Size 1.

Is it over? I do not think so . . .
