Silk01 - SG for SG noobs, noble or prince level

I would have thought that the standard installation could be removed, and the mod reinstalled into the mods folder. However, I haven't done that - so I dont know what might be lost in terms of customization of the mod.

Also - I'm playing a solo game, and I found that the BUG mod renames units, giving them a name based on the type of unit. Makes it kind of a pain to weed through when the units are upgraded. For example, I have a unit that is now a rifleman that started out as a warrior. I've unchecked the 'unit naming' option in BUG, but it doesn't seem to be retroactive.
Anyhow - should we disable that in this game - and if we do, how does the mod work when one person makes a change to the mod setting and then it gets loaded onto another users machine?

Unchecking unit naming would not be retroactive, no. Also, the BUG settings are most definitely local.

Removing my standard install would basically force me to redo all my settings for it.

So when a player is skipped - are they inserted into the rotation when they are available again, or does the rotation stay the same and they would wait until their turn comes up next time around?

Also - do most SG players install BUG as a mod, or as a standard install? I might have to change my habits while they are new and easily molded :)

I believe they wait until their turn again.

I do a standard install, that way if if another player does not have BUG installed it does not affect the save

Played 24 turns till writing came in. I think we're in a good place right now.

T72 - Preflight check, set Hamburg to work copper (Monument in 11), send extra warrior in Berlin south to pop hut and scout, stop worker chopping near Berlin and have him start building road to copper
T75 - Pop hut for 76 gold
T79 - Stalin asks for OB, I say ok so we can scout his land, Berlin Worker>Barracks
T83 - Hamburg Monument>Granary
T84+ - Scout communist lands, Moscow-2 Archers, Petersberg-1 warrior, probably more now
T87 - Berlin Barracks>Granary
T88 - Copper connected, revolt to slavery
T91 - Axeman whipped for two pop in Berlin, overflow into granary
T93 - Hamburg Granary>Barracks
T94 - Berlin Granary>Axe
T96 - Berlin Axe>Axe, writing comes in, set research to Masonry but this is open to discussion, ended here. Signed OB with SB to start gaining diplo bonus (see below)

Our land:

Note west of Berlin - another copper

Temporarily Stalin's land:

Note that Stalin has horses, so I'm sure he has some chariots by now. Make sure to build a spear or two for stack protection.

Our cities:
Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0002.JPG

Both cities have granaries and Hamburg is almost done it's barracks. Berlin is set to slow build another axe/spear then whip two more pop (whip  wears off in 8 turns), so Berlin should be able to pump out 3 more axes/spears in the first 10 turns.
Hamburg's borders pop in 3. The worker there is set up to chop and then pasture pigs

Diplo: The plan to befriend Sitting Bull and use him against Shaka is going well.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0008.JPG

They hate each other! Plus their borders are close, and with jungle south of SB he will most likely settle towards Shaka. Yummy.

War: Probably the next set should see the start of the war. I was thinking something like 6 axes+1 spear to go after Moscow? (I expect to have to kill~3 archers there). Someone with more experience should chime in though. It'd be nice to hit Stalin before he gets his 3rd city up. I'm thinking keep Moscow, burn Petersberg (I'll post a dotmap next for what I was thinking with city placement).

So there's my first ever civ report! Hopefully it didn't make you .

My attempt at a dotmap - things might change when we can see iron. If the image is too hard to see here, I attached it separately. I also took the liberty of naming one of geographical features on our continent during my turn. I thought it might be a fun thing to do.

All city locations have good food. I think our economic center should be cities along the Great River. Also pink X and cyan square could run a fair number of cottages. Berlin and Hamburg become production. Moai goes in either yellow X or red X.

For settling order I was thinking 1.) Take Moscow 2.)Cyan square to get stone (NO wonders have been built yet...) 3.) Blue square to get another cottage city going 4.) Red or yellow X to get Maoi city going

Can do a skip or a swap (meaning I just switch places in the rotation) - but for this case I think a skip is more appropriate. Not a problem ;)

As cripp said, standard install is less problematic

I think the next turn set should see an axe stationed near moscow to keep tabs on military unit numbers. When the DoW comes, that unit will be kicked out and can then join the rest of the invasion. I'd just hate to see us get 6-7 axes if a little bit of recon will tell us that we need 8-9 at that point.

Yeah I'd say we ditch st petersburg and keep moscow.

I like the cyan square location as the next settling location. Two Food plus a stone can be good for whipping future military units and recovering quickly. It could then morph into a cottage location as dual said.

I think the blue square would follow cyan. While cyan is whipping, blue could be a cottage town right out of the gate.

For tech, I'm ok with masonry at the moment. Would we then go after IW or writing following that? Building libraries might detract too many hammers for right now, but writing is on the way to mathematics, which would be good for chopping an army, and puts us on a path to construction. OTOH, depending on war progress and timing, it might be good to get IW so we can see metal-hooking potential for stalin.

We have writing, that is where I finished my set.

We shouldn't need iron to finish Stalin. For techs, Masonry sets us up to get the 'mids, which with stone would go up relatively fast. Math would be nice for chopping bonus but we really don't need the health at this point. IW would be nice but doesn't seem to give us an immediate advantage. We could also go for alpha for trading purposes.
For intermediate range techs I would like to head for CoL so we can have courthouses to help us REX.

Oh yeah. Duh. You mentioned that :)

I think we can wait a bit for CoL - I dont think we need to worry about REX costs yet. But you are right - it would be a good intermediate tech once stalin is gone.

So yeah - masonry next sounds good. We can decide on alpha or IW then.

Coercivity - are you there? Haven't heard anything from you in a while - you're up next!

Hey Silk! I'm still here. Just having some problems with the BUG mod. Apparently it can't detect the mod? Did you manage to solve your problem trynthlas? I just installed bug a couple of days ago just to play this sg, but maybe i'm being noob and forgetting to do something? All my other games have changed interface though. Put me down for a skip too.

Also, is there a way to switch the bug mod on and off? or play with bug compatibility but with the original interface?

If all your other games have the switched interface, then I'm wondering if you installed the BUG mod as a standard install, rather then as a mod. My understanding from cripp7 and trynthlas' posts is that with it installed as a mod, it MUST be installed as a mod on other systems, rather then the standard install.

You could try uninstalling BUG and reinstalling as a mod. If you've just installed it, then you probably aren't in trynth's position where there has been a lot of customization to it - and therefore wont lose anything but a few minutes to uninstall and reinstall. That way you could take your turnset without having to skip this turn. Having to take a little time to work out SG kinks in the beginning isn't the worst thing in the world - and partially what this SG noob game is for.

Sorry everyone for installing BUG as a mod - I didn't realize it was going to cause this much trouble. I guess I know what to change for future SG's. I thought that if the game was rolled with BUG, in any install form, it needed BUG to be loaded. I didn't know that the standard install would result in it not requiring BUG.

Think of the standard install this way - it's put inside your CustomAssets directory, meaning that it's a tweak 'you' made to change the way 'you' want to see your games, rather than a functional change that has to be loaded as a mod (obviously BUG is not changing function, but in effect that's the difference between the installs).

I'm trying to see if I can install it in both places and change the ini file in the mod directory to not use CustomAssets.

lurker's comment:
So if I downloaded the latest save/any save, I would need BUG (whatever it is) to open it?

Ok, that works. Unfortunately I don't get my pretty BlueMarble graphics, but oh well. :p

I'll take the save for tonight if that's fine?
