Having been a vetran of previous versions of Civ have to admit being a little lost with the religious elements in Civ IV.

I plan therefore to start a game and invest lots of resources in temples etc and just see what happens

However being a bit of warmonger I am not sure what I am going to do with all that culture (find some heathens to smite)

Some questions

- are religions equally good (do I just go for the first that comes along)

- are some religions better for war (not sure if being buddists requires you to become a pacifist - but I doubt it)

- presumably for the whole crusade/jihad thing I need a single state religion and those theology - organised religions civics

- which traits are best for spreading the word to the unbeliever

1) Yes, there's really no actual difference between religions.

2) No, religion has no affect on your policies unless you like being more realistic. You can be a cruel and ruthless Taoist if you want to.

3)Yes, you need a state religion for those two civics. Organised Religion is for building your economy and Theology is for preparing for war. If you're spiritual, you can switch between these on a whim as it suits your strategy.

4)All you need for spreading the word are open borders and missionaries. Organised Religion is best for this because you can build missionaries without having to build monasteries. Make sure all your cities share your state religion, then spread it to others.

Thanks

Decided on Celts cause they were spiritual - and had intended to spread the Christian word but so keen was I to discover Theology that I invented hindusim by mistake so I better start spreading the Veda instead.

Working on something called Temple of Artemis, can't imagine why - you get a free priest - but I shall suspend my scepticism about the value of that until I've finished this particular game.

^^Best religious wonders are actually University of Sankore and Spiral Minaret. They require Paper and Divine Right respectively, just so you know.

easiest way to win through religion seem to just get all 7 then spreading one of them to basically the whole world building the UN and having them vote for you as world leader cause of the unified faith.

That's actually harder than simply crushing all your opponents. Leaders who found religions prefer the religion they founded rather than one that was spread to them anyway.

Not always true. If you play a little bit agressive and only attack civs not of your religion, then most civs who are weaker then you and have only 1 city with your state religion will often switch to your state religion. Even when they have founded their own religion. Although nutcases like izzy might still keep their own religion.
