So many audio engine choices, which to use?

Hi, I have Civ4 and the expansion pack. My sound card is a Creative X-Fi with 5.1 speakers. Which audio engine (discrete 5.1, directsound, EAX4, and the 50 other choices) would produce the highest quality sound and best sound positioning?

Yes, I have tried this on my own for the past half hour before posting, but I can not come to a definite conclusion.

I play with audio disabled. I certainly can recommend this mode. Saves resources on other things...

I have the same config as you. You can use 'use system config', which in this case is the same as 5.1 speakers. Strangely under Warlords I experience sound crashes when far in the game (modern time). Only then, only with warlords. Under CIV 4 vanilla the same settings worked fine. The alternative EAX 4 doesn't crash, but the sounds are not that rich.

PS: There are updated drivers (june 2006) at the Creative Labs site.
