So where's the catch in BtS, I wonder?

Of course, following the success of Civ4 and BTS, Firaxis is going to produce a Civ MMORPG next. I bet it will be called World of Civilizations.

If you're a common player, this is a nightmare. It means the late game will now be incredibly laggy, because Python checks in SDK are one of the major sources of lag. If you have a slow computer, time to say bye-bye.

Oh noes! And there I thought they'd have to increase late-game performance if they focus on that part. Man I was so looking forward to finally play huge maps w/ many AI without the lagging...

I'd guess they're done expanding Civ IV UNLESS this sells so insanely huge they can justify another one WHILE thinking of enough stuff to actually warrant one.

Civ V is way off in teh distance and the only immediate Civ plans beyond this expansion is Civ Revolution where they hope to take over the console world. If a consolized version of Civ IV it might be fun but I'm getting a little nervous this one. It just looks like they're going for slick and cheesey complete with a cartoony Cleopatra whose airbags are about to explode.

Let's streamline the game (ala Railroads! as compared to Railroad Tycoon) and beef up the presentation with an emphasis on FUN FUN FUN (light and fluffy)! Let's make Civ more like a next gen Pirates! somehow.

and it looks like the barbarian guy screenshot is from Lord of the Rings... Montezuma looks like a caucasian tourist dressed in a toursit Aztec suit... and i think Civ5, if it comes out, will come out around late 2009 - 2011

according to previous statistics...

Civ1 was released in 1991.
Civ2 was released in 1996. five years difference.
Civ3 was released in 2001. five years difference.
Civ4 was released in 2005. four years difference.

so, that places Civ5 around 2009, but given technological difficulties, prehaps 2010, if they even bother to. then again, theres that funny "Civilization:Revolution", so who knows, maybe even 2011!
More accurately, Civ4 came out in 2006 (that thing in 2005 was just a beta).

Speaking as a player of civ4, I *don't* want them to be planning to come out with civ5 anytime soon. I want them to be committed to getting BTS working (because with so many fundamental changes, you just *know* there will have to be multiple rounds of patches). And frankly Firaxis would probably benefit commercially form seeing that happen anyway, look at this way: to play BTS new players will have to buy two packages from them; to play Civ5 new players will only have to buy one.

pp.s "The airbags about to explode" comment -- right on. I had an amorphous negative reaction when I saw it, I think that comes close to putting it into words. It's annoying in general how much "pixel fantasizing" goes on here, but at least with Boadicae (gotta learn how to spell that ...) it is a realistic looking animation ... the way her green eyes are slightly crossed makes her seem mysterious even. It adds a touch of atmosphere to the game, just like the music does, or Cathy slapping you. Cleopatra? She's a cartoon joke. If they make a Wii version, I hope she doesn't end up looking like that on it, because I think they're misreading the playing demographic on that platform if they do. The Wii (with the Miis) are supposed to have a cartoony quality to their games -- but a family demographic, not cheesecake!

But I'm probably not the target demographic for this. My 9 yo son may be 13 when that comes out, he may really like it :)

The catch I'm afraid we'll see is that there'll never be a proper final patch. They'll release one or two more patches after BTS, but I doubt those will fix everything without introducing new problems themselves, and soon Firaxis will move on to the development of CivV (and/or Civ games primarily developed for consoles) without devoting anymore time and effort to CivIV patches (nothing to be gained after all, patches don't earn you money) and we'll never get a 100%-working-as-it-should game.

That's just plain ridiculous.

I can only hope that is some design art and that the FINAL portrayal won't be THAT ********. Civ already is pretty weak with female representation and showing those few female leaders as inflatable stippers can't help.

Agreed. It's getting absolutely ridiculous in Civ 4 already what with the cartoonish quality of the leaderheads.

My only hope is that Grimus doesn't see that picture of Cleopatra...

 wonderful things pop culture does to history... :)

It would be sad if this were the last Civ Expansion/Game...That would suck...bad......well...I don't know...

This is the catch, and I'm frankly suprised more people haven't said something about it...

It costs $29.99 and you have to wait several days for it, most likely... ;)

Okay, the real catch: they've exposed many more SDK checks to Python and XML. Wonderful. As a modder, I'm looking forward to it.

I will be posting an article Friday that will address this, you won't be dissapointed.

As in, I will not be dissapointed if I were a modder, or as in, you will lift the worry of lagging from the shoulder of the average player? If it is not the latter, I will certainly go mad! Oh well, hope is the last thing to die...

The real catch isn't with CivIV it's with Civ V. The problem they have with civ is that the game is so complicated that it's hard for new players to learn. I'v played from civ 2 so I could pick up civ IV vanilla and play prince no problem. With Bts new players have had a time to learn the game. To pick up a civ game for the first time with the amount of content it's gona have with Bts would be very very hard to learn. So from a realistic and economic point of view Civ V will have to have much less features then CivIVBts....which will kinda suck.

Also they wana branch out to platforms which could be good but could end badly.
