So which is more addictive, Civ4 or WoW?

I played SWG for about a year, I played wow for about 7 months. I have been playing Civ games for 13 years.

MMOs are well boring as ****.

I have two lvl 60's in WoW, but haven't played in over six months. It's definitely more addicting than civ4.

ON line: WoW no question. Anyone seen that South Park epsd. That says it all. ( try You Tube just to a search of the two names together and you'll laugh your ass off.

Offline: Civ3/Civ4 no doubt.

WoW is like fastfood that simply doesn't fill you up. You keep on going until the day you start to realise it leaves you empty. I've played both EQ and WoW but got bored quickly by WoW as it's just a modern rehash of EQ - the main game feature is still the same, click on monster, attack, kill, repeat until you hit 60.

PvP was boring too. 1 vs 1, I win, 1 vs 2, they win. The game is too gear dependant to be a good pvp game ever. For PvP, I think Guildwars is way better.

So, civilization. What appeals me so much about Civ is that you can stop any time you want where as with those MMORPG's, there's actually a social pressure on you once you start raiding and being in a guild. Hell, being in a group in an instance does it. I think that in the end MMORPG's are doomed to fail because the gameplay will be so limited as it has to appeal to millions of gamer and be applicable with millions of people playing it at the same time. They're destined to be easy and predictable games and as such, will never satisfy for too long. Just look at how quickly people hit 70 after the Burning Crusades and how quick they'll plow through the endgame content. It was the same with Everquest.

Oh well, most addictive in the long run? Civilization but for short term it has to be a MMORPG for it's not just the game that keeps you coming back, the social part of it puts you in chains if you don't watch it.

:king:

To misquote Zaphod Beeblebrox:
If there's anything around here that's more addictive than Civ IV I want it caught and shot right now.

The hours I'm spending on this game are already reaching marriage-threatening levels.

I apologize in advance if this should be in an OT forum, but it's definitely about Civ4.

Civ4 players like to say how thoroughly addictive Civ4 is. We proudly claim that we spend days on the same game uttering "j... juuu... just one more turn" at 4 in the morning.

I once equated playing Civ4 to a heavy crack-heroine cocktail with an LSD chaser.

Well, MMORPGs have challenged this doubious distinction as of late. Civ4 is not something like WoW, where you have easily accessible statistics of who's playing online at any given moment, because Civ4 is a completely different kind of game, as we know.

But exactly which game is more addictive? WoW or Civ4? With MMORPGs, do you think Civ4 is an "old drug," no match for constant gameplay of WoW? Or do you think Civ4 maintains an iron grip on a persons mind that WoW cannot compete with?

Just an odd ball conversation that I hope will get interesting responses. :)

Well, I played WoW in Beta and for several months after it's launch, and have stepped back in ocassionally to see if anything had changed. While WoW seems to be addictive to many, I found it stale and unchanging. Virtually all the content added (save for the finally-released expansion, a near-record for longest-to-release-an-expansion in the MMORPG world) was for the higher/highest-levels only. The starter areas have not changed one iota; the low/mid-level areas have changed not a whit. Nothing's been added. It's the most stagnant MMORPG I've played (and I've played EQ1, EQ2, WoW, DAOC, UO, Shadowbane, Saga of Ryzom, and more I'm too tired to list).

So, for me, the answer to your question is very, very simple. Since Civ4 is at least an interesting game that remains so a year later, and WoW is utterly dull and simplistic and unchanging... obviously CIV4 wins.

Actually, I find the complete opposite to be the truth.

CIV 4 gets incredibly boring after a while. How can you say that the content of WoW is more dull and boring, when virtually every game you play on civ4 is exactly the same, more or less. You end up looking at the same opponents, ending up building same buildings, knowing almost in forward how the game is going to pan out, and what will you have to do. In other words very static. Online is different ballgame, but still nowhere close to the diversity you get in WoW, be in PvP, PvE, or the social aspect. What's even more true is that WoW takes more skill to play, and it definitely involves much less luck which to me is very appealing. Pretty much you know where your at. Civ4 still very ******** AI system involves so much probability and luck that some of it's aspects are out of your control, no matter how much you try to be scientific about it. WoW wins hands down.

You've played 750 hours online? Seems like online would get kind of boring.

World of Warcraft has a depressing little command known as /played to show you EXACTLY how much time you have logged into each of your characters. Its not uncommon for these to be in excess of 20 days played time for a level 60 character. Usually takes about 12 days to get to 60, and its easy to spend far more time than that at 60 working on the next great thing.

This made me laugh. In EQ people don't talk about hours they talk DAYS and most people who play more then casually have well over 100 days invested in their main character.

Civ 4, I never have been one for WoW, generally because the majority of the comminuty had a combined IQ of a small, ******** grape

Aah, I'm harsh to them, but it definately seemed that way.

PSO, on the other hand... that had me addicted for years, and would probly still be eating away at my social life now had the hackers not taken over.

The hours I'm spending on this game are already reaching marriage-threatening levels.

same for me
I've tried a MMO game (can't even remember the name  ) for a few minutes (it was a 2 weeks free trial version, I believe). I quit and never started again.
If I want to be social, I invite people at home, and play cards, dice or whatever.

Wow surely was more addictive for me (yes was, I´m out, I´m clean, wohooo)
Well,I played full time, in a very competitive guild on a very competitive server. (Horde side on Magtheridon, eu, cough).
Stopped playing after last summer tho to be able to get some time for school.
Well, I guess you can realise that your playing a bit to much when you
*Have to plan your worktime in order to get home intime for a raid,
*Know exactly how long you have to make dinner/microwave something on the bat from org to silithus.
*You and your gf spends more time talking to eachother over vent/ts than irl, even tho sitting next to eachother ;)
*Gets surprised/annoyed if your raid activity gets below 95%.

Heh, civ is more forgiving ifI come home tolate from work/school or dont have time to play for a day. :P

I think they are both equally addicting depending on the type of games you like. The most addicting games I have played were Empire, Civ (and sequels) and Ultima Online. I am not usually a fan of the Fantasy games so MOST rpg games don't interest me. If there was a good Strategic/War game that was MORPG then my wife might have to divorce me...just kidding...barely :)

WoW is like fastfood that simply doesn't fill you up. You keep on going until the day you start to realise it leaves you empty.

Isn't that true of just about any PC or video game?

I haven't played World of Warcraft, but I have had experience with other MMOs. I agree with most of the comments that Civ's style of play draws you in more than the desire to get a new shiny toy or level up in an MMO.

To me, the answer is simple. I can play Civ (even the original) forever. The variety of possibilities and the random maps keep each game fresh. Try a new leader, and you have a completely new game on your hands.

Everquest/WoW, it ends when I level cap or my money runs out.

I'd say WoW is definitely more addictive. The whole game is based on being addictive - simple Skinnerian stimulus/reward. The actual gameplay is boring, most will admit, but they have invested so much in it and they are addicted to trying to get that next better item.I'd say the actual empirical evidence would definitely bear it out too. There are a lot more people who play WoW 12+ hours a day (for months on end) than there are who play Civ that much.

As for WoW requiring more skill, please. Slightly more eye-hand coordination, sure, but that is all - that doesn't mean tiddlywinks requires more skill than chess. The amount of strategy is extremely low in WoW, and even the execution is trivial compared to any RTS game. I mean, I got a warrior to rank 14 and a priest to rank 12, but I am not going to pretend that required anything besides a pulse and some free time. "Anyone can learn the tricks" in CiV IV? Well, there are a lot of people unable to beat a real Deity game (random settings, not rigged) who'd disagree.
