So, why aren't you a civIII modder yet?

A simple question, since i guess that most people in this subforum have been playing civIII for years. Modding it is not that big a step. Also you never know what abilities you have as gfx creator until you try (my first creations were horrible).

Bryce 7 is now free, a decent 3d making program, and is all you need to get to create fancy gfx for this game. So why don't you enter the wonderful realm of the modders? ;)

I'm trying, I'm trying... :) Not easy though, as I only recently begun. And to be honest, it is a bit of a dounting task, creating roughly 50+ frames for a relatively simple unit.
And for CivIII it's only that much, AoW needs 80+ frames for an equally simple unit.

So it might take a loooong while before you see an actual unit from me. I do appreciate all the work that you modders do though, especially when I found out about all the hours of work that creep into creating only one unit.:goodjob:

Simple answer for a simple question:
I don't want to.

Complex answer for what I perceive is not so simple a question:
For the same reason that not every reader is an author.
For the same reason that not every player is a game master.

Some people enjoy building worlds for other people to enjoy. Some people enjoy living in the world that other people have created. Different strokes. :)

Devil's Advocate response:
I know that the game is flawed and I have learned to accept the limitations and I still enjoy the game.

I know there are many great mods (and modders) out there and as of yet I have not seen anyone one claim to have the perfect mod.

Why would I wish to try to mod the game into something I know will still be imperfect? I will just need to learn to live with a new set of limitations.

Real Life response:
I barely have time to play the game. :( If I have to choose between modding the game or playing, I will play the game.

Additionally, the general forum discussions, XotM and HoF and many SGs do not use mods, so to remain in the mainstream; I stick with the unmodded game.

@Raliuven: I rather enjoy SGs and PBEMs that involve mods. The HOF WW2 scenario and CCM in particular stand out that way.

Give a modded game a try sometime - it's very fun :)

I have very recently been trying modded games. I like AOI. :)

Why do you think that everyone who plays the game will want to become a modder just like you? Do you know acknowledge and accept that people may think and act very differently from you?

I do the basic modifications, Scenario's, but new techs, or units, can't do those...

Ive only fairly recently come into the Civ3 fold having found the CD in a bargain bucket. Ive moded a couple of scenarios and some of the existing units (like making modern naval units faster), but when I have tried to add units to scenarios I have caused the scenario generally to stop working.

Raliuven sums it up pretty well for me as well. And more specifically, for art, I do not consider myself particularly good at drawing, animating, etc. - if I spent a ton of time on it, I probably could do okay (I've learned that through real art classes, or I might not have thought it even possible), but I don't have the motivation to when I know there are others who are much more talented than I in that area, and will likely enjoy it much more. For scenarios, it's a daunting task, and there's already a pretty good scenario in most historical timeframes I might think of making one about.

I created a scenario once called Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. It included the southeastern portion of the United States, the eastern part of Mexico including the Yucatan peninsula, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and (not to scale) the island of Bermuda in the extreme northeast corner of the map. The U.S. and Britain (Bahamas) with Jamaica and the Dominican Republic were allied against Cuba and Mexico whie Haiti remained neutral. Not necessarily a mod, but it did take me five weeks to make. I enjoyed one good game as the U.S. but my second go at it as the Cubans was cut short by a real-life hurricane. My computer was destroyed and all that hard work lost forever. I never modded again.

Kyriakos!!! I always admired your graphix for years, but it wasnt till today that i decided to join this forum. I love all your stuff, but i dont really know anything about modding. I tried to use your cities for the normal civ 3 conquests game, but i get stuck with with only 1 version. I would like to see your ancient cities in ancient times, medieval cities in med times, and so on. I choose the ones i liked best, but when i tried combining them i failed. When i make a city in the editor it looks misplaced, and with a pink background all around it. I used some tool to save a PCX into a mpeg or somethign so that u could post the pics in the forum, but instead i copied and pasted them into another PCX, using the stardard game file as a guide, but it came out bad. How do u do this?

Thanks a lot Kyriakos!!! I have been modding all day and now i can do it even with my eyes closed!!! I combined all of your awesome city graphix into 1 pcx file and now im having a blast!!! There is something fresh for every age :). One thing i noticed i dont know why sometimes the transparent color fails so i just use another one (green, blue, or magenta) and my files begin to work. Weird lol, but hey im getting results! Thx again :) :) :) I cant believe a noobie like me is modding lolz

I've made a few mediocre scenarios that I put up here, and another one that I've been working on for months in an attempt to make a really good one, but time is the key enemy here.

I wouldn't even know where to get started for graphics making, and frankly, I enjoy making scenarios, or at least giving feedback on improving others' scenarios.

Prince of Persia, you should ask in the C&C forum cause i have not modded in a building in aeons, so cannot be of help there :) I can only tell you that a building has up to six files:

-Buildinglarge.pcx

-Buildingsmall.pcx

-BuildingSplash.pcx (if it is a wonder)

-Buildingiconlarge.pcx (goes to building icons, in the city screen)

-Buildingiconsmall.pcx

-text file
