I only ever get into fights with Monty. Ocassionally, the Apache too. I never give them gold either. It may be that I havent downloaded the patch. I don't know. Usually, I will take pocahontas or something. But really all I do is purchase whatever land I want. Only rarely do I make them "eat it".
I think the reason that accepting their settlements takes your relations up is because it works as a pressure valve for -X "Your way of life is threatening to us" or whatever that modifier is for cultural pressure. But for the most part, I rarely see combat until a neighbor civ gets rowdy or the king comes to snuff me out.
