Some Interesting Editor Discoveries

Using a program called "Resource Hacker," I did some snooping into Civ3Edit.exe and I found a few interesting things that are clues as to what Firaxis has planned for the editor.

First, there is this city dialog box, which will probably be eventually used when we get the ability to add cities on the map.

Next, a Unit dialog box which looks similar to the City one.

Looks like we will be getting a minimap eventually.:D

I also found the terrain types and worker jobs pages, but they had add/delete buttons on them! I don't know if it's possible to hack those so they show up like the other buttons in the hacked editor. I also found some text that said "Add terraforming improvement" and a bunch of other text that pertains to things that the editor doesn't yet support.

I doubt that it is a good idea to hack these at the moment as I believe they are still hardcoded. As long as they are not supported in the exe file there is no point of hacking. :p

Take for example terrain, if the map generator do not support the new terrain then there is no point in adding new ones. :)

Nice TedG. If Firaxis would let ppl know this stuff I bet they would have some much happier ppl on their hands.

Yeah, that's probably why the hacked editor doesn't have those options enabled. They'd probably just crash the editor.:D It's too bad that we can't go right ahead and hack the editor to unlock these features, but it's great to know that Firaxis is at least planning to implement them eventually. It's funny because Firaxis has for the most part kept quiet about what they're planning for the editor and the game, but they leave these little bits and pieces lying around (although probably not intentionally) that give us clues as to what they're up to.

Looks like we can look forward to some great new editor toys to play with in the (hopefully) near future. When those three functions are enabled (along with civ placement) we'll have a real honest-to-goodness scenario editor on our hands!

I found the minimap dialog first!:p I did!:D See here is the thread: New Discovery Only difference is they actually listened to you.  Will anyone ever listen to me????!!!

P.S. - PaleHorse can you count? I have posted in some threads you have and all though you are very strict about 5+ signatures you have yet to notice my 6 line one....too late now I changing it:p

TedG, thank god you found that stuff out so we know what to look for any time down the track. I especially like the minimap you discovered all by yourself. Pity no one else found any of this out earlier :D And in preference, I would wait 2 years for an editor which works over a half-whacked editor which ****s up all the time because Firaxis didn't spend time on it.

So take your time Firaxis and release it as soon as it works great, even if it takes years to get it to.

I heard you before king of camelot, I'm just the strong silent type so I try and keep my mouth shut :). Anyhow some interesting discoveries, though I think its just gonna make me want these options that much more. Why? why? why? why must you tempt me with these teasers. Damn yyyoooouuuu! :)

I heard a swooshing sound....but I have no idea of where it came from. ;)

Well, if your sig was this small I probably ignored it because it ends up being smaller than a normal sized 5 line sig.

And I would rather have a partial editor than wait for a completed one. I wouldn't be able to adjust the corruption if I didn't have the partial editor!!!

I think Firaxis is really trying to tempt us, because of the one major thing that they left right out in the open. Most of you probably noticed this: When you right-click on a terrain square in the editor, and choose properties, there's a "starting location" option to choose which civ starts there, but the option is grayed out! The stuff I found with Resource Hacker is embedded in the .exe file, where they think nobody will find it (Well, they were wrong:lol: ), but the starting loaction option is like right there! Maybe they intentionally put that there (didn't hide it) to let us know they're working on it, so maybe people will stop whining.

I doubt it. If they wanted to keep ppl quiet they would have announced it to the world instead of this round-a-bout way.

Sorry to say that, but it doesn't matter who "found it first." All that matters is that it was posted in two different forums, on two different websites, so now more people will know about it. We can all look forward to what Firaxis has in the works for the editor.:D
