I have had a cursary(sp) glnce through the faqs and not found the answer I need.

It is really to things, firstly can someone explain the GOTM to me, and how to join and play... What are the rules (barring the ones that vary game to game)

And secondly, what is the deal with SGOTM. What is meant by succession, how does it differ from GOTM and how do I join and play that. Many thanks.

The GOTM is a starting-save of a game that is played by everyone - each person plays their own game. You can 'join' by downloading the save from the GOTM Announcement links or from following the GOTM link on the Home page.
You can also find the rules for GOTM there.

SOGTM is where a team (not sure on the number of people) SHARE a game, where each takes 10 turns and passes the save on to the next person. The team discusses and agrees upon general strategies & goals.

His second paragraph describes any Succession Game (a SG). SGs have been played for a long time, and have not usually been played competitively. SGOTM brings a new competitive edge to the concept, and currently there are 15 teams, all starting with the same start file, and trying to see who can finish with the highest score or achieve the fastest win under some adverse (very!) extra conditions.

SG and SGOTM teams vary in size, but are typically 4 to 6 players.

Welcome to the forum! Some of the confusion is about the different game versions floting around. Which version do you have - conquest?

There are many sources of information for rules, procedures, scoring, etc. Browse around the forums and the GOTM site http://gotm.civfanatics.net.

GOTM is a friendly competition on who can play the best game from the same start. You simply download the game, play to finish, and submit the final turn.

There is a modest set of rules, mostly avoiding exploits like reloading.

There are also 3 spoiler discussion threads where people can compare results to date.

I suggest browsing through the current Conquest GOMT2 (aka COTM2) spoiler thread to start.

We've got a bunch of helpful people here!

If you are interested in playing any of the games, then there are slight changes depending on your game version. We run a Conquests game starting on the first of every month, which requires C3C to be patched to v1.22f

On the 15th of every month (starts later today), we run a 'classic' game, which requires either PTW (patched to 1.21f or above) or Vanilla civ with some add-on graphics packs to give you some civs equivalent to the PTW ones.
