while i was eating lunch, an old memory came back to me out of nowhere. (hate it when that happens) but this memory sent me thinking and i thought it was worth it's own thread:

when i was in canada, at my middle school, we had this Terry Fox Run event where we run around our neighborhood. At the end of this run, we give some guy who's collecting money for charity a toonie(2$). (i think the motto was "A toonie for Terry" or something like that)

So anyway, me and my friends ran around the neighborhood, and when we got back it was time to donate money to charity, except there was one problem. One of my friends didn't have any money. he iirc just had a penny in his pocket. He said "well something is better then nothing" and my other friend started complaining that it was disrespectful or something and they got into an argument. my other friend convinced him not to donate that penny, but my question is, do you think that something is better then nothing? or do you think that 1 penny is insulting and disrespectful?

IMO if your collecting money for charity, 1 penny is better then nothing, even if it is 1 cent.

EDIT: Poll up.

$.01 is infinitely more generous than $.00 so yeah its better.

For a charity, a penny is better than nothing.

For a person, a penny is worse than nothing.

If indeed all he had and could give was that single penny, he should have.
No religion or moral philosophy (that I know of) recommends giving 100% of your wealth. Some religions suggest 20%.

Something is very indeed better than nothing! At least something is being given!

Your idiot friend should've thought about what he was running the race for before looking like an @$$.

For that it was okay, not great but not bad. Just to spam a little, the real problem was that there are pennies in the first place (should stop minting them).

Mark 12 said:
41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins,[j]worth only a fraction of a penny.[k]

43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on."
It's in the Bible man. ;)

One time a guy "collecting money for the homeless" came up to me in the streets, asking for money with a very rehearsed presentation and everything. I honestly didn't have my wallet with me, and to show him I emptied out my pockets; it just so happened that I had a penny. So I gave it to him and he threw it away, yelling, "how's that going to help somebody?" I was about to say "it won't after you've thrown it away" but resisted...I can see, though, how it might come off as a little insulting.
