I re-installed the game recently after accidentally deleting one of the important files... long story...

Anyway, the point is that when I had reinstalled it, I loaded up the game and found that all 4 of the Cradle of Civilization maps were available to me... I have never bought (or pirated) these maps. They were in the maps folder in the game directory when I looked, not in the My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization V folder.

Can anyone explain how this could have happened?

It might be irrelevant but they don't have icons on the map select menu, just ? signs

Maybe got mixed up with the GOTY year edition?

I mean like Steam DLs them for you so they are on your hard drive but you can't access them unless you buy them. Maybe vanilla Civ5 is not being hosted on Steam anymore.

For example when I play DoW2 all the cosmetic DLCs are in my computer because I can play against people who use them, (so they are rendered on my machine) even though I can't access them for my own armies.

In a simliar vein I ask the forum:

I reinstalled my game via steam on a new computer. I have the original disk still but thought this would be easier, anyhow, It did not download worldbuilder!? Must I reinstall from my disk to get SDK? Or is there someplace on steam I can obtain it via download?

But I can play on the maps. I already had one game on the mediterranean map and I'm about to start the asia one up... I definitely don't have the GOTY edition if that's what you mean
