Somnium discussion

I noticed that in MP Somnium runs somewhat slower than normal, and you sometimes need to click few times to get card drawn of something.

This is normal since the code is run for each machine and you have to wait others have finished to implement your action. Especially for Somnium MP games where you have to wait that other player have finished to see the movie of the turn (it's impossible to make a pause in python function, so all turn impl are handled and saved, then you see a replay of the turn. This effect is double if you have to wait other player to finish his movie and send "OK, it's done"). This effect is amplified if you don't play with sound because there is some pause when playing sounds. I will try to add a visual effect when you can draw a card or end turn for 0.34, but there are some other things more important i want to improve before that for Somnium.

Tcho !

So has anyone seen/had a perfect game yet? I've come up a point short twice but the AI almost always discards a 7 sometime during play.

Just played a game against Basium and had a thought; wouldn't it be a neat trait if Basium automatically banked any discarded Angel cards? Same thing for Hyborem and Demon cards. So if you banked an Angel/Devil, it's yours. But if you discard one, it's his.

There was a post around here somewhere where we talked about Somnium house rules. But as far as the FfH included game goes I think simliar is better (in fact the point of Somnium was to provide a very simple very elegant game as a contrast to very deep and complex nature of FfH).

Altough some optional house rules could be fun.

It's very nice, the cards are very well designed. But it's ruled mostly by chance.
In a RPG (I think Might and Magic VIII) there was a similar card game included as well, it was fun and distress, but more influence from the player was possible. So it needed more cleverness to win.

If this is the case in Somnium, I would add: perfect!

MM VII I think. VIII was bad and IX never worked. VII was the last decent one, and VI was the best, but I digress.

Digressions. Let me tell you about :hammer2:

Acromage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcomage Might and Magic 7 and 8. I think it was a sidequest with decent loot to become the champion in 8. Hey.... can we get a bonus if we beat every leader in somnium?

The loot in M&M VII was quite good :)

In fact Arcomage was my first thought after I have read of somnium.
Well, Arcomage is a bit more complex and less dependant on chance, so I still prefer it, but somnium is fun anyway.

Thanks!

Please!

I'd really like to know where to get the art- I'm playing a Fall From heaven D&D game and my players are begging to play Somnium. If I can find the individual pictures it should be too hard to make the cards myself...

Seconding this, I can't find the dds files anywhere in the arts folder... have they been deliberately hidden?

All I want to do is play a game of real-life somnium :(

You have to unpack the fpk file. After that they are in the Art/Somnium directory.

Thanks kael!

I plan to print them out on card and guillotine them into perfect rectangles. I'll take pictures if the process is a success =)

I've been playing with friends just using a normal deck of cards so far, and i've gotten them all hooked!

If you get this set up i'd really appreciate an upload. I'm sure a lot of people would love to have the cards printable and playable.

would it be possible to have an event linked to Somnium?

Like if you explore a lair and find an old wizard who challenges you to a game.. win and he joins your side.. lose and he emerges as a barb unit or damages your unit?? just a thought
