Anyone understand this? I thought that a desert city would gain 1 faith & 1 food per adjacent desert or desert hills, doesn't happen, why not?

It does happen. It just shows up as a district yield, not a tile yield. Open the city report panel where district yields are reported. You can also definitely see faith and food in your yields on the basic city banner.
