Hello all,

I have just recently re-formatted my hard drive but realised after that i've misplaced my drivers and utilities disk.

Does anyone know a way of checking what my sound card is, tried running dxdiag.....

thanks in adavnce

IIRC DXdiag identifies the card through it's drivers. If you don't have drivers installed, it can't identify it.

If your card is integrated on the motherboard you could try the motherboard manufacturers site for the drivers. Realtek's AC97 is/was quite common.

For certain identification, open the case and read what it says on the board/chip. Then google that and I promise you'll find your drivers.

manage to bodge together some drivers that seem to work for the graphcis and sound cards.

does anyone know a site where you can check out detials of your motherboard because i have a suspicion that my graphics card a ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series isn't quite up to scatch and its intergrated so wanted to know what ports my motherborad had before buying a new graphics card.

Board: Hewleet-Packard Asterope2 1.0

thank you again in adavnce

Easiest just to open the case and look. A quick google search will net you pictures comparing the different mobo slots.

anything else, live on my own and aint got around to gettin any screw drivers for nine months. so cant unscrew it

If you can't even get the case open there's not much point in worrying about upgrading...

Go to your PC maker's website and look for your model number. It will probably tell you what you can plug into it. That way you won't have to know anything really detailed about the parts that make up your computer. You don't really need to know the exact motherboard just its featurers. If you have PCI, AGP 4X or 8X, or PCI express. Also, if its already using a video card you wont have to learn how to disable on-board graphics, if it has them. That will have already been done. If your card is not PCI-express, to begin with, then it is probably getting time to think about a new computer. AGP cards can still be bought but buying one would be throwing money at a rapidly dieing tchnology.

Oh, and if you look in their support section you can probably find detailed instructions on how to change your card.

I think this would also work for the sound card.
