Hello! :)

As the title suggests I have got sound problems. They occur throughout the game - the intro, main menu, in game, the lot!

The game, every 10-15 seconds, basically freezes and the sound stutters for about 2 seconds. Minor compared to some peoples' problems I know, but its really stsrting to annoy me.

An example of what I mean is here
(2.2mb). The stuttering is usually followed by a complete freeze for a further second.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening?
Cheers!

Hi Nixon,

please post a dxdiag info file.

Start/run

Type in: dxdiag

After it runs go to bottom of screen and use the save all info to get the file.

All yours...

P.S, you can see at the minute I am running on-board sound, but I also have a dedicated board which makes no difference at all. :mischief:

Cheers!

Your page file useage is above 400

When running 3d games it is best to have nothing loaded in the back ground.

Try turning off all that stuff you have running in the back ground.

start/run

Type in: msconfig

Under the startup tab disable all.

Under the services tab go to the botton and check the box marked hide all microsoft services (make sure you do that first or bad things could happen).
After you have verified that ms services are hidden then disable all the rest, apply and reboot your computer.

Run the game and see what happens.

Good luck

Thanks for your help, but it didn't work. :(

Anyone got any other suggestions?

Cheers!

I'm just curious about something. I don't own a board with the Nvidia audio or an old SB Live! (for some years now), but are those both supposed to be enabled?
Again, I'm not sure it's an issue, but it did strike me as odd when I saw it in your dxdiag.txt file.

Nixon,

The nvidia on board sound has new drivers which should not have a problem running the game.

Your SB live card drivers are from 2002.

It is possible that no new drivers exsist for this card that would support direct x 9c.

If that is true, and the card is very old, I would pull it all together and nuke the drivers.

You could attempt to disable it thru windows device manager first in an attempt to test the nvidia on board, but I do not know if that will fully work without removing it.

I just remembered a setting I had to change in Civ4 when I first installed it. Where it lists "Speakers" in the Audio options, it had defaulted to Stereo. When I changed it to System Configuration it resolved some sound issues I'd experienced.
You may have already tried this, but just in case you missed that setting (I did at 1st, not realizing speakers was such a big category) I figured I'd post.
Good luck!
