Sound Ruined.

Just open the device manager, and delete the sound device that is causing trouble. Then restart your computer. If it asks for a driver at startup, you'll have to cancel it (you could try searching for drivers online) and we'll try something else.

I done that, and noticed I had two 'Realtek High Definition Audio' icons, one with a yellow exclamation mark. I deleted that one, but still no joy. Should I delete the other?

Yes, you might as well - it won't harm your system. Delete both, then restart.

Ok. I deleted it, re-installed it from the bubble what came up, restarted it again and it STILL isn't working. I've deleted it again until you tell me what to do.

Could you post some screenshots of the problem, and any messages associated with it? Like the device in device manager for instance, I don't want to get you to try something which I know isn't worth doing, with some insight.

Here's some pics. If you want more of a particular thing, just ask.

Would a factory restore solve the problem? I could take it to the computer shop and they will wipe it for about £20.00. But I hope this is a last resort.

Try searching on Google. There may be a driver you have to reinstall (or file from the CD you have to re-add).

Would it? I'm going to town soon and I could get it done.

Unless there is a more serious hardware problem, yes, a factory restore will work. It's always nice to return a computer to its original settings after receiving it from someone else anyway.

Indeed it is. Still, do the pics help you?

I don't think it's serious: it should work.

You know, from the pics I'd say it's fine...that's why they don't help  . I'm confident I could fix it if I was sitting at the computer, but solving computer problems on a forum is more difficult. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

That audio wizard thingy might have some settings. You might as well play around with the config there, since you're looking to do a format soon anyway. Messing it up won't matter ;). So you do have your speakers in the green jack at the back of your computer?

Actually, I've just remembered something that happened to me - muted my sound until I changed a setting....try this:
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Advanced (in the 'Device Volume' part). Make sure none of the volume sliders are at 0, and that none are muted.

Sorry I can't be of more help :(.

Lets see if I cant help you out here.
go to start>run>services.msc
then go down to windows audio and check if its on automatic. If its not, set it to that. see if that works.

Another solution:
OK we got it fixed. The plug and play software emulator had was missing.
Fixed by searching for machine.inf then copy to temp directory. remove
at about line 20 " ExcludeFromSelect=* "

goto control panel, add new hardware, next (let it seach), yes hardware
is connected, next, scroll to bottom, add new hardware device, next,
install from list, next, select system devices, next, select have disk,
point to amended copy of machine.inf in temp directory, scroll to "plug
and play software device emulator" in right hand column, next and
complete install.
