I have thought about trying out a source mod. I have half life 2. I've looked at youtube videos of Fistful of Frags and Battlegrounds 2, which both look pretty OK.

Has anyone tried any of these or any others and if so, what did you think of it?

Fortress Forever was pretty fun. It's like a hybrid of TFC and TF2, but takes more elements from TFC.

I also played the Half-Life 2: Wars beta, and it was insanely fun. Half-Life 2 and RTS combine.

Oh, Gmod. Gmod is a must.

I originally thought Gmod would be good but then I read that it requires a lot of other downloads and stuff in order to be any good.

Also, what is Source SDK and do I need it to play a source mod?

Source SDK is the dev kit for making source mods, although sometimes mods are labled as Source SDK by steam or x-fire.

Battlegrounds 2 can be fun. Zombie Master is a lot of fun if the people on the server aren't idiots. (Unless you're the ZM, then it's funny watching them be idiots).

Garry's Mod, FTW!! :D

SMod is alright, thought who would wanna fight combines with Gordon's Magic Stick!?!

Gmod doesn't require a lot of downloads, but they certainly do make it loads more fun.

Wiremod \o/

Well, if you are using Garry's Mod at the moment (and do a lot of ragdoll posing), I'd suggest not updating it right now since there are issues with the face and finger poser.

Woops, too late. I don't do much ragdolling, though, just contraptions.

there's an option in steam to prevent a game updating

Well, the latest patch that Garry placed up fixed the finger/face poser tools :D.

Because of the recent steam giveaway thing, I tried out Zombie Panic Source and have been having lots of fun with it.

I saw that available yesterday and immediately started downloading it 'cos it had "zombie" in the title. What's it like? Seems rather similar to the coming Left 4 Dead, which I don't think is a bad thing :)

I don't know anything about Left 4 Dead, but for a free game, it's quite good. Everybody except for one person starts as a human with one pistol and a random melee weapon. Depending on the map, it's the goal of the humans to either survive for a certain amount of time or complete the objectives without being killed. If a zombie gets you, you then respawn as a zombie. It's not as much fun to play as a zombie, though. The environments are all really dark and it's difficult to find weapons/ammo, so it adds to the fear factor.

I also tried Insurgency this morning, and I'd say it's as good as, if not better than Battlefield 2. The community of players is certainly better.

The communities for these mods has really been great. The experienced people have been very helpful and courteous to us new guys.

Zombie Panic is basically a gun/ammo hoarding contest. In the original ZP humans win by sitting in vents with a magnum, in ZP:S they win by creating ridiculous barricades

The zombies win in most of the games I play in. :dunno:

EDIT: Anyway, Insurgency is also really good but can be frustrating to those who mind getting killed pretty often at the beginning. If you're lucky you'll end up with a lot of people who know what they're doing.

The one with vehicles in it was pretty terrible.

I had a feeling it would be. You could probably have more fun messing with vehicles in garry's mod.

But Insurgency! It's excellent.
