SP6 - Deity Training

We had only just got the Internet at the end of my turn, and were 3 techs away from modern armor.

We definitely don't have em yet.... :)

-Sirp.

Yes, that's what I meant when I said we're "three techs" from modern armor, Speaker. But yes, it is an important thing to note.

Modern Armor is the only unit I know of in the default rules that you can "know" how to build, but not know where a required resource to build it is.

-Sirp.

Heh, that one got me once, too.

Renata

I can't play tonight like I said - I had to go into work today, and I'm about to pass out. Sorry :( . (I know, whine whine ...)

I can play after work tomorrow, though, which is still in my 48.

Renata

Having to work on the weekend? Ack! You have my deepest sympathy.

Having to play this straight after the Roman game would send you insane I'm sure; it's fine for you to play tomorrow :)

Sirp

I am insane. I am certifiable. You ever see that commercial 'I can't believe I ate the whooole thing'? Well, I can't believe I played the whoooole thing. I need a nap. :p

Anyway, 10 turns full for your perusal.

First the minimap, for anyone who doesn't want to read an exhaustive list of 'A razed, B razed, C abandoned, D flips yadda yadda'.

SP6-1440AD.jpg

IT: Dyes colony was left unprotected, gets over-run. Oops. There's barbs running about! :p Grand River flips. Ah, somebody went and got Salzburg on the island. Cool.

1395 AD (1) Settler rushed on the west side of the Ottoman blockage to replace the dyes colony. Boston is down to size 4?! Somebody hasn't been paying attention ..... :p Centralia razed. Grand River taken back -- deity opponents get *four* defenders in a flipped city? Yikes. Tank stack moved into position to go after last two Iroquois cities.

IT: The highly-entertaining sight of a Japanese bomber bombing a barb warrior -- and missing.

1400 AD (2) St Regis captured. The Japanese are, alas, in the way - I can't get to Kahnawake this turn. Troops moved up and St. Regis abandoned. The settler I rushed last turn founds on a dyes tile. I start a blockade on the isthmus to isolate some Japanese and Ottoman troops.

IT: Japanese take Kahnawake and kick us out of their territory. The Iroquois are no more. :D

1405 AD (3) Lux back to 0%. Unit support costs are killing us. I switch a lot of tank-building cities to wealth, and core cities that don't have them already to stock exchanges and commercial docks. Corrupt cities all go to wealth also.

1410 AD (4) Golden age ends. Ecology in five still at -13 after more cities swapped to wealth. Upgrade some infantry in critical areas, move a few workers into position to road for Ankara attack.

1415 AD (5) Ready for the Ottomans. Attempt to plant spy - it fails, and the Ottos declare war. :D Ummm, they had an MPP with the Japanese, though! Eek! Um, anyway ... Riza razed. Kahnawake razed. Tyedenaga razed. Ashur, with Copernicus, razed. Ellipi razed, and the rest of the Japanese and Ottoman units cleared from the peninsula. Ankara, the Ottomans' only oil source, captured. Mugla, that blight within our core, razed. Shimonoseki, Japanese oil source (their source in the tundra is *not* yet roaded), is captured. Leipzig razed. Hamburg and Munich razed. Nagasaki and Ise captured. Echizen captured. Bremen razed. More upgrades to mech inf, infantry brought up to the front lines from all over - I'm almost positive I cleared out all the opposition from behind the lines. Then find a whole other stack of a dozen tanks and go capture Nagoya, on top of one of Japan's two rubber sources. :p More moving around of defensive units -- let's see what the counterattack brings ...

IT. A Sipahi sneaks through the lines and gets a tank and a couple of workers. Two Ottoman cities founded. Japanese .. not bad! About a half-dozen units lost, no cities.

1420 (6) Whooo, an infantry in Yokohama (size 12 on plains) eats 18 hit points worth of tank army while losing only 2 hp itself. There was a radar tower under the fog, but even so -- yikes. Anyway, Yokohama captured. Ottomans' two new cities razed. Units in American territory mopped up, and a mech inf moves onto the Japanese's last rubber source, in the jungle. Other than that, just tanks moving back to recover to health, and defense moving up. Oh -- Ise abandoned; don't need it. Some radar towers in reach removed.

IT. Lose one tank I forgot about.

1425 (7) Sinop razed. Kafa razed. Tokyo razed. Toyama razed. Omi razed. Japanese rubber pillaged. (Ottomans still have 2, tho.) Bizen captured. Nara razed. Nagasaki abandoned.

IT First-stage war weariness hits (3 corrupt cities riot). Japanese land a mini-invasion in the far southwest. Other than that the attacks consist of all of one single tank. :p Echizen flips. Japanese found another city.

1430 (8) Adana and Bingol razed. Echizen razed. Echigo (new Japanese city) razed. Sapporo razed. Ankara abandoned. Shimonoseki abandoned.

IT. Urrrghhh. I *thought* I had checked the abandoned coastline areas for landing parties last turn, but apparently I didn't. Sipahi's come through and take three cities I had left undefended.

1435 (9) Hakodate captured. Istanbul razed (had been pop-rushed to size 1!) The three lost cities are recaptured, and the settler that landed last turn found and killed. Suo razed. Fukushima razed - that was the last AI oil source. Izumo razed; Grenoble abandoned. Osaka captured with JS Bach's. Probably can't keep it, but will try. ;) Will keep just a mech or two in it. Hakodate abandoned.

1440 (10) War weariness rises again. I had had synthetic fibers researching, but there's no point - we have 100 tanks left with me not having built any in the last several turns, and both civs are down to only six cities. Luxes raised to 30%, which should be enough for now. I get the first truly atrocious RNG results of the day -- an unfortified Sipahi on a hill, no river, eats a vet and an elite tank, both undamanged, before dying to the third. Izumi razed. Aydin captured after massive bombardment. Konya razed. Bizen abandoned. One of the Ottomans' rubber tiles pillaged - so either they or Japan must be out, now. Ottomans have four cities left, Japan has five.

And finally, the game. Borealis should be able to finish it in a few turns -- there is an artillery stack heading for the biggest Japanese city left, and we're up to about 10 tank armies for bashing through the big Carthaginian cities. (Most of them are healing this turn, though.) Good luck!

Renata

Great job Renata! :goodjob:

Indeed, playing ten turns of Modern Age war is really insane isn't it?

In retrospect, it may have been better for us to just have gone for modern armor, and skipped that rubbish with the Internet. Oh well, all's well that ends well.

we're up to about 10 tank armies for bashing through the big Carthaginian cities

You do need a nap! Carthaginian cities? Been playing a little much of GOTM19 have we? :p

And yeah, armies aren't that good because they take SOOO long to heal. You use them once then you have to spend 3 turns healing them!

Borealis, two words: Finish them!

-Sirp.

Looks like Borealis is having computer problems or something, and I haven't seen Stormrider in a long time.

Sirp, do you want to finish this puppy?
If you don't have time, I will do it. :)
Your call.

That'd work for me. Getting a bit frustrating. :(

The final save

This is the minimap at one stage in the game. Look how far behind we are. Getting that far behind is inevitable on Deity - getting much further behind is common - but we came back and won.

Great game everyone!

This concludes your training course. :) I look forward to playing with all of you in future succession games!

-Sirp.

Great game everyone!! :goodjob:

Thanks for all your help Sirp. I know these TDG's take a lot of your time. Once again, it is appreciated!
I see you are taking on another TDG as well. I will watch that game closely, as well as Speakers companion game. That will be interesting.

Now if I can just find the time to play a solo Deity game...........

Yeah I've never played 'competing' succession games before, and since Speaker was starting one up, I decided it was too much to resist :)

The Game of the Month is on Deity next month, and I will play in that if I get time, and I think that Borealis and Renata will too, so you could try playing in that and we could compare results.

At any rate, I expect to hear about all your first solo Deity wins soon! :)

-Sirp.

Congrats guys!

Very fun game to read and I learned a few things. The value of trading your only iron source comes to mind.

I also look forward to playing SG's with any of you in the future.

congrats on your stunning victory. i hope to survive GOTM 20 (will be my first deity game)

I won't touch the GOTM. I looked at it about a year ago, maybe a little less. You had to milk the game to get anywhere in the standings. If you didn't milk, you were garbage. There were many people unhappy with this but they refused to change the system. At that point I promised myself I would never play another GOTM.
If they have changed it since then, well good for them, but it totally alienated me, and I will never give it any consideration at all.

Congratulations everyone!

@ Matt: I know it's a cliche (and rather preachy (not quite the right word...) of me to point it out ;)), but "Never say never." Even though you know yourself better than anyone else, some things you do (or have done) may surprise, or even shock , you...

JMB

PS - One of these days I'll learn not to stick my nose in other people's business... ;)

@Shillen, bewareofgnomes, JMB, Speaker: Thanks :)

@Matt_g: Yeah I understand your thoughts on the GOTM. I didn't try it for a long time for the reasons you've given, and I'm still dubious about it. I can understand how the attitudes there could alienate one completely.

I'd still love to hear about your first solo Deity win when it happens though :)
