played Spain about 5 times and this time I only had one city as my religion because that’s all the requirement in the civlopaedia and wiki... but nope, the conquistador converts the cities to atheist.
I take it they are just written badly instead of something being broken?
Anyone know?

How is it meant to work?

Does the City convert to your founded religion, your dominant religion or the religion of the unit (based on the religion of the city that built the unit).

I’d assumed it converted to the religion you’d founded, and so had no effect if you hadn’t founded one. But I’ve never really played with this mechanic.

Yes many things seems to be described as "your founded religion" but actually work as "your major religion"
There're also reverse cases, where it is described as "your major religion" but actually work as "your founded religion"
Really need to check how these religion-based stuffs work.

I converted up to major and they started swapping.
However I then kept playing the original save and paganise the world! This felt fun, eradicating religion.

Ok copied the thing from the "create game" page and it says that it will adopt the players dominant religion when a city is conquered.

as the dominant
Yes, and the wiki says
"Converts cities to Spain's religion (if they have founded one) if it captures a city or is adjacent to the city when it is captured."
So I'll pop in and change this to dominant, cannot change the civilopaedia though
However it is great to know I can eradicate every religion in the world from being dominant if I just create one little outlying city with a temple and pillage the faith I need. :) Fun strategy of the day for me.
The conquistadors are just crazy strong.

What if you don't found a religion but adopt someone else's, will Conquistadors convert?

Thanks for spending time on editing the wiki :)
According to the FL vid 3 years ago, Conquistador converts cities to Spain's majority religion, implying they don't have to found a religion for their bonus to be active.
Even in the ingame description of the Conquistador, there is no mention of the religion being "founded".
I edited this again on the wiki and will test in a hotseat game later today.

I play Spain alot and have found that same "bug" of not converting cities but it was due to religion mods I found.

I love conquistadors.

The real reason to play Spain.

Without a religious aim, I have found Spanish musket rampage is getting its turf heavily encroached on by ottoman musket rampage. Besides having 60 base strength vs 55 and getting a free promotion, just slapping on Ibrahim’s Serasker makes them +10 in sieges. I just wish the Mission hadn’t been effectively nerf like it was- used to be you just slap them down outside 1 campus for you +2 science. Much easier to work with.

I can’t recall if using victor to produce swords at +1 promotion and then upgrading gets you the second promo.

That's fair. Not sure I'd ever want to play Spain without a religion though. But yeah, it is a handicap that the strength of a conquistador relies so much on that angle. But when they work, they WORK dangit.

This is not strictly true because you would be crazy not to have a missionary with each conquistador and if you do it right you will get +4 against everyone so against the ottomaons you your be 55+10+4 vs 60 (a conquistador is not a city)... so +9 vs a Janissary is good. +14 vs everything else is very good and +19 wth a GG. +23 with Oligarchy...+27 with the religious Army policy... oh my, one shot territory. Yes it is the extreme end but hey that's fun to think of like a +80 power plant

I always forget about the combat bonus of Philip- super handy. If Treasure Fleets had a little more oomph I think I’d play him a lot more.
It’s also unfortunate that Janissaries get to be half price. They’re considerably easier to mass than conq+missionary. Albeit the synergy of an early Chaplain apostle is extreme...

Do you guys often consider Crusade as the Enhancer belief for Spain? I know it defeats the purpose of conversion after conquering of the Conquistador, but hey, extra 10 CS is great especially when they always bring religious units into the city siege.

RV is a game best done very fast and peaceful, before a conquistador can gather pace
DOM conquistador is far enough in that normally you are outstripping science so they can take half the map very quickly before they slow and you have to go to tanks or whatever.

Actually getting Crusade is not something I felt I needed, to me it is sort of like you are having to play 2 victories, convert then capture and the conquistadors seem fun enough without it.

I used to but it is kind of like nerfing your own unit. If someone is adopting my religion widely, that also negates Phillip's counter reformer so why bother fighting them?
