Special Characters in city names

I have searched the forum without finding an answer, so forgive me if it has already been discussed.
I have "de-anglified" city names in my mod and use the native form (mainly for european civs). This means "ü" in München, "ø" in Tromsø, "ö" in Göteborg and so on. On my computer this works fine, but if I'm releasing this mod - will people with different character set on their computer experience garbled city names, or even worse - a crash?
I know that the ASCII code for some of these special characters can differ between various character set, so maybe it's best to use only plain english characters in city names?

I had no problems with special letter characters on the map and for SOE, that is using many of these letters, no problems were reported.

But for other files I received a crash report from a user in CCM for the Ataturk file written with "ü" in the PediaIcons file and I myself run into a crash with a soundfile that was named Tromsø while testing AnthonyBoscia´s WW 3 scenario:

Sometimes there can be problems with these characters from unzipping such files.
 
I've "de-anglified" city names in Destiny Reborn as well, and in fact have much in the 'Pedia, Improvements, and Units written in the native tongue of the given Civ. If you stick to those areas you should be safe, it is the file names that need to be properly Romanized.

If Civ itself cannot handle the character, you will see a '?' for that character. For DR, I assume that since I just have a recently built machine with no extra fonts installed whatever I have I can safely assume others do. For me, all the euro characters above show up fine, but the Arabic and Hindi ones do not, so I had to re-Romanize the characters, while retaining the native spelling. For instance Cairo is Al-Qāhirah natively, but I had to change it to Al-Qahirah because the ā translates into a ? in-game, resulting in Al-Q?hirah.

I suggest you do what I did, import it as it is natively, replace what the game can't handle with the nearest Roman equivalent.
 
I will remove special characters from file- and folder-names, but continue to use them in city names (and test when I introduce a previously unused character).
I have only de-anglified euro names and a few hindi (yet), but I think I will follow Gojira's suggestion on how to transcribe arabic and hindi names.
