Speculation: A New DLC before Expansion

Hi!

This is pure speculation on my behalf:
In the Gods and Kings-section here on the forum, the latest info on release date seems to be May the 25th. We have also seen a mistakenly released patch some week ago. Add to that the added achievements of 30 on Steam, and we have a possible case of a double civ pack for CiV! :)

The 30 Achievements have been added so early on Steam that they really can't be linked to the expansion, but rather to a DLC-pack that perhaps arrive along with a pre-expo patch.

That's my five cents, anyway!

There is likely a new patch before expansion.

They released one last month and quickly rolled it back because it was still in QA and I think Dennis Shirk said somthing to the effect that it needed more time.

As for DLC's, it's not impossible, but considering one of the draws of the XP are the new Civs, it would be self defeating to release DLC civs around the same time as the XP.

Some people would claim they are nickle and diming customers by not including those DLC civs in the XP, and from Firaxis and 2k's point of view, dipping into the customers with DLC might reduce the eventual sales of Gods and Kings.

Dexters: Good point about the nickle and diming! Still, the weirdly low amount of achievements and the civs we know will come could speak of a pre-expo DLC: IIRC, Celts, Byzantium, Carthago and Maya are confirmed GK-civs. We also know about the big mid-2nd-millenium European scenario: Perhaps that needs more European civs than what would be reasonable for an expo? I'd say Hungary is a must in that scenario, so perhaps they release a DLC with that civ and/or Poland?

And once 2K Greg said that Zulu was his favourite civ, so it could be that it's on its way already! :) It sure would fit nicely with the Netherlands later on.

Portugal seems to me a big miss not to include in an expansion, so perhaps it comes in a DLC?

I'm just stumbling around in the dark, but it is fun to speculate a bit!

can't wait to buy whatever comes out
me thinks it's sooooo cheap
one night out on the town can easily cost 10X+ what they are asking
and i get waaaay more enjoyment out of one package than i would get out on the town

love Civ5

good job developers !

Hamilroonie: I certainly agree with you! CiV is extremely good value for money.

On to the topic at hand again - 25 May is nearly three months away (sadly), and the patch I would guess is here at the end of March. And with bigger patches there have nearly always been a DLC. Perhaps a DLC would stir up some interest in the game until the xp and whet the appetites of all of us who eagerly await GK?

I wouldn't mind taking on Shaka or Manuel I in any game soon! ;)

The achievements clearly say that they belong to the expansion pack (for e.g. "ACHIEVEMENT_XP1_23_NAME").

I believe there won't be any more DLCs for quite some time after the Expansion, maybe none at all.
(from the achievement percentages I'd definitely say the DLCs didn't sell all that well... most are below 1% (the majority is even at or close to 0.1%)).

I saw that "XP1" was part of the names of the achievements, but that is only to be expected, since all DLC from now on must be fully compatible to the expansion. The early release and merely 30 of them could very well mean it is a DLC that fits GK like a glove.

In the week leading up to the release of every DLC so far, new achievements have appeared, consistently, and reliably.

This is the right amount of achievements for a double DLC pack, NOT an expansion. I'd expect an expansion, with 9 new civs and new scenarios to have more like 80 - 100 new achievements.

They just wouldn't put out achievements 3 months early for the XP.

A patch often comes with a DLC, and we know a patch is almost ready (the premature release).

My guess, given the evidence, is a double DLC pack, compatible with the XP, coming out, probably on Friday or Saturday. Possibly preceded by a patch. The patch will likely now come out as soon as they get it right.

Which new civs is anyone's guess!

I'll be looking forward to it!

I hope that the DLC model will be removed for good after this expansion I hate it

I very much doubt it... the extra money that they get from DLCs keeps them going without worrying where their next bill will be paid from, and is a "good little number" for them!

Personally, I like it, it's cheap, and it gives the game a good, newer, feel to it. Imho, they are good value for money. Oh, and I love the scenarios and maps, as well as the new civs... I hope the DLCs carry on until Civ VI is almost done!

I don't know about the maps... even the scenarios are a little weak considering it is essentially the same game in an extended era and what not.

Denmark and Babylon have been disappointing. There just isn't enough diversity there. Weak, unimaginative civs. Spain/Inca have been tremendous additions. Along with Polynesia, those are the only ones that have been worth it.

Ever think that maybe the achievements put up aren't the full amount for the expansion? There's all sorts of things you could speculate, but another DLC isn't one of them, IMO. If another DLC was coming anytime soon, it would've come already; we haven't had one since August.

I'm afraid they are going to add a money-sucking Natural Wonder DLC pack, and it includes some random dumb civ, like Canada or Finland.

lol I can't wait for the Zulu in Civ5 ^_^

Mentioned in another thread, but I am hoping they are not a reskinned Monty and actually offer something unqiue to play with or have a fun UA.

I find their packs to be extremely good value for money. $7 for a wonder pack, half the price of a pack of cigarette that only lasts one day:lol:

Didn't they say animations are coming soon, couldn't that be the patch ?? :)

Have they actually announced a big patch for the end of March? Any links if that's the case?

I agree the count for achievements is really low for the amount of content in an expansion.

If they are going to release a DLC before the expansion, they would do it really soon so there is space in between.

It does seem likely.

One last DLC with one last major patch for Vanilla sounds ... reasonable, actually. They have to know some customers won't want the new Xpac and that there really won't be any more patches for it after GK. further, they have to know that excitement is through the roof and a lot of people would be interested.

I'm hoping for Kongo or Zulu (I'm pretty sure Ethiopia is in GK, I mean c'mon!). A kongo/Portugal pack would be awesome.

Yeah about that patch any info when it comes because there was a patch for multiplayer but it hasn't come yet
