[NFP] Speculation regarding upcoming new district

Some kind of public services district. It fills the gap of common city buildings we are missing like police and fire stations, waste disposal and education. It could be a versatile later game district but with exclusive building choices to specialise your city further or sort out any problems.

I love this idea, but unfortunately it seems we have only two new buildings. Nevertheless, I think it is more likely for it to be a "law" district (corthouse/police) than a "spy" district. This would still tie it to secret societies (as a counter), but could work as well with existing systems (loyalty-espionage) even with systems that could be brigded between secret societies and base game: just like forest fires have been included out of apocalypse mode, I feel additional spy missions, or certain "corruption" effects might be included into base game (in fact, low loyalty is already corruption, so having a building -corthouse- that mitigates its impact in city output, but does not avoid the risk of flipping could be an idea).

As a fan of colonial play I’m hoping for something like the Colonial Office which had mentioned several times on these forums.

However, It seems highly possible the new district will have something to do with the Secret Societies mode. Which is no good sign for a link to colonies/vassal states.

My predictions:

If Secret Societies will revolve around espionage: a Langley type of district

If Secret Societies will revolve around reforming existing religions: an alternative cultist/secretive holy site (bit far fetched, but I like the thought of a ‘burn the heretic’ competition :).. after all we’re also sacrificing units to volcanoes..)

When speculating about possible new districts to add in future expansions or DLC, I think its best to reflect on what actual civilizations tend to have, that is not currently found in the game.

Right now, emergency services like hospitals, fire stations and police stations are unrepresented in the game, so it would make a lot of sense to add such a district to the game. Additionally, the hospitality industry is also not fully represented in the game, unless you count that as part of the neighborhood district or entertainment district.

The second possible district, could have something to do with garbage and recycling, since that is also only partially represented in a game.

For a 3rd district, you could have Information Technology or Intelligence, such as an espionage district as others have already suggested.

Is it likely something associated with Ethiopia?

Maya were tangentially associated with the apocalypse theme, and the whole pack had a south/central america flavour

Not necessarily. Ethiopia might be likely to have something do with a Holy Site.

Well nothing about the Maya design was geared toward the Apocalypse, though I agree that it was intentional releasing both at the same time. We don't know for sure if the district has to do with Secret Societies or not.

I only know a cursory amount about Ethiopian history (oh wow, the food though). That said secret societies - particularly in earlier eras - could also be tied into religion, e.g. sects/heresies from a main faith?

Railyard? I've been campaigning for enhanced Railroads and this could be a part.

Garbage dump? The more you produce the more it fills up and then you have to build a new one.

Suburb? Have to put those chain restaurants somewhere.

I feel like the Neighborhood is already very much representing the Suburb idea. Railroads aren't a part of the game I ever really think about, but maybe could be with a dedicated district (though presumably unlocking in the industrial era and offering trade/production bonuses would make it a weird trade-off for Science Victories, since it would make Spaceports that much more expensive. The production bonus would have to be significant.)

The garbage dump is a really interesting idea that could make for interesting tile choices (since I imagine it would reduce the appeal of adjacent tiles while boosting others in the city.) I picture being able to build scrap yards, incinerators, and recycling centers, with increasing abilities to reduce the rate of the district filling up (say a 10% reduction, +1 production, +1 gold for the scrapyard, 25% reduction for the incinerator but with increased C02 emissions for GS players, and 50% reduction, plus 1 aluminum from Recycling centers.)

But the espionage district could do a lot to beef up spies (which are already one of my favorite parts of the game, but which take forever to build) and could benefit the World Congress by doing more with Diplomats.

Yes I agree, and am secretly hoping, that Secret Societies might have a tie in to religion. I don't know for sure if the district will be tied to Secret Societies though.
The soothsayer was a new unit but I don't remember it being specifically mentioned as coming with the pack like the city-states, resources, and natural wonders, but only as part of the new game mode in the advertising. See here: https://civilization.com/new-frontier-pass/

So it is my assumption that it is a generic district anyone can build and doesn't have to be used when playing with Secret Societies.

Transportation hub/district has been a common suggestion in the past. Something that boosts trade and tourism, and could have major adjacency bonuses for industrial zones, with all bonuses increasing if there's a rail connection to another city/travel hub.

The district is also coming with two new buildings, similar to a district like the aerodrome.

The most obvious district for me is a bridge, with Golden Gate being reworked to extend to more tiles.

Also, due to endless "empower tall" requests, I expect some kind of metropolitan district, boosting yields by percentage / improving yields per pop/specialist, declining in power with number of cities, while having huge impact in 6 tile areas
