Spread religion on its own?

They do not seem to spread at all on its own, even when cities nearby have no religion. Do they ever actively create missionaries?

If I'm just counting on "pressure" doing the work, what is it based on?

Your rivals absolutely will be creating and using missionaries and great prophets if they generate enough faith. Play on higher difficulties if you aren't seeing this yet.

Also, religious pressure building up from nearby cities will convert followers in other cities. This is based on the number of followers in those cities and how close they are. The best way to abuse this is with the Religious Texts enhancer belief. You won't even need missionaries once you have that.

Hover your mouse over the religion icon on each city, it will show how many followers and its pressure. I think the zone of influence is 10 tiles.

It does spread, but it's slow on its own. A good idea seems to be to make sure your holy city is as centrally-located as possible. A single early missionary will speed things up a lot, but it's probably best to wait until you've generated your second prophet to enhance the religion (and as mentioned, take Religious Texts).

Thanks all. I'll try with Religious Texts next time. I think I took Messiah for Enhancer..

This. Religious Texts makes such a huge difference it's ridiculous.

Also, keep in mind that spreading a religion passively (via pressure) creates a snowball effect. It will take time to spread to the first couple cities, even with Religious Texts, but the more cities convert, the faster it spreads down the line...at least until you bump into a rival religion.

For maximum effect, take a missionary or two out early and convert cities that are relatively far from your capital, which then gives you two starting points for the spread.

Yeah, you need to reach 'critical mass' for a religion to spread fast enough on its own. Just your holy city alone will take quite a number of turns to convert even your own cities to begin with. It's tough at times to know if you wanna pop a missionary early enough or save up right away for enhancement.

One thing to note : the only thing that matters is your city being MAJORITY religion. A size 3 city that has 2 followers exerts just as much pressure as a size 30 city with 30 followers.

Texts increases pressure from any given 'source'. However, Itinerant greatly increases the distance that pressure sources will reach, and depending on distance and density might even be worth more.
