It has got to the point where I am just playing it on Bootcamp now. Clearly with Mac lagging 2 patches behind PC, its not a high priority for the developers.

What patch, other than the Spring Update, is the Mac version waiting on?

According to the mod developers, Mac has missed the last 2 patches. One was a minor fix for R&F, the other the spring\summer 18 patch

This is getting ridicolous. You can't claim you support an OS if you are this lax about updating.

I suspect the former MacOS team is now the iOS/MacOS team with no additional resources and a mandate to prioritize iOS development.

To me it's just mind boggling that integrating a patch, that's already been QA tested for PC, into the mac code base takes so much time. It seems the code base for the game is completely different for the platforms, and they basically have to reimplement the changes.

I wish they would just give up on X-platform multiplayer, this is the reason the updates are so slow. They waste weeks of effort trying to get X-platform to work and finally give up and finish the update. Considering how few people need X-platform this is totally unnecessary! If they really want to continue to pursue X-platform they should do so BETWEEN updates, but once an update is out for Windows 100% of their effort should be devoted to getting the update out for the Mac.

Are there better choices than Aspyr to do that translation?
Or are 2K/Firaxis locked into contracts that won't end for a
while so they have to keep going with Aspyr?

God Knows I don't want to defend Aspyr, because their performance has been execrable, but I'm not so sure Firaxis shouldn't take a great deal of the blame here. When you publish a game that has obviously not been play tested at all so that you have to Patch it immediately, and Patch it several times before you even get to the first Expansion, and then Patch it even as the Expansion is coming out, you place a huge burden on any outside group or firm trying to keep up wth all of that constant changing of the game. Add to that that Firaxis has washed its hands of any responsibility for making the game compatible with anything other than Windows, and that means Mobile Applications, Mac and Linux are all left twisting in the wind.

Yeah it seems the game was not architected in a good way by Firaxis, to make it easy to port to different platforms.

Unless things have changed over the past ten years and some, publishers who port games do not get more $$$ to patch games. They get a lump amount included in the initial contract for X-amount of future updates. Games that consistently require patches, or consistently receive "refresh" updates, end up sucking resources from the porting publisher. It gets to a point where assigning programmers becomes problematic because the porting publisher's company continues to secure other contracts. So, what frustrates regarding Aspyr and Civ6 would frustrate with any other company that had the Civ series porting contract. FWIW.

    EDIT:

I'm ready for the Spring Update as well. :)

That's why it is preferable if porting is done in-house - not that I want Aspyr to close down though.

I'm reminded of the testy exchange about compensation between Hammond and Nedry in the original Jurassic Park.

Steam is d/l-ing something. 74.2 MB.

edit: It's been so long since I've played that I'm not sure what to look for to know that it's been updated. The version number is now 1.0.0.260 (163994)
