Squats, Bench, Deadlift: This is your fitness thread

One of the reasons I haven't been on CFC as much this year is that I've gotten in shape. Particularly on stamina/legs, via biking and hiking. It's weird having people compliment me on my tan as a software developer, but I've definitely been outside a lot more than most years.

Today's ride was a relatively leisurely 19 mile ride over mostly flat terrain, trying out my bike post tune-up but also not being late for dinner with friends. I did fit a 26 minute hike in the middle of it as well, although elevation gain was only in the dozens of feet due to it being in central Ohio. My serious hikes this year have been in the Appalachians, and I have at least five bike rides of 55+ miles, the longest being 70 miles. What surprised me most was that I wasn't sore the day after the 70 mile bike ride, despite it having twice the elevation gain of any ride I'd done previously (roughly the same as thetrooper's recent rides), and being all on gravel/dirt; a year ago I did 50 miles on a paved trail at the end of the season and was dying by the end. So the difference in fitness is palpable.

thetrooper, you have some nice rides lately. Those are some major mountain bike distances!

Oh thank you @Quintillus!

Yup, I try to squeeze in one long ride per week, sometimes two but it's hard to maintain domestic peace if you're out and about all the time. Furthermore one or two high intensity rides per week.

Bikepacking Appalachian sounds great. If SARS-COV2 never happened I could have been to Montreal (work) back in spring 2000. Who knows, maybe add two weeks vacation before returning home with a plan like this: watching one game of Canadiens hockey, biking the Appalachian and watching one game of NYR hockey. And then we're back to domestic peace. Sigh!

-> also: Try out things. Different people like different things. I found that it's fundamentally different if you
- do something solitary on your own, like running or going to the gym
- get drilled in a gym class with an instructor
- play a team sports like football or basketball
- do something else competitive, like e.g. martial arts, tennis, etc.
Each of these things appeals to different people. You should try variants of all of them, so see what you like best.

This is a good start for a daily exercise.
it's also something for which its easy to measure progress: one week you do 30 pushups, the week after 35, then 40, etc.
It's very important to see progress and especially for "beginners" it's really important to get motivation and continue exercising regularly

Every once in a while one of those crossfit videos will pop up somewhere and I'll actually watch some of it. What stands out to me when I watch these is how these people seem to be "jerking" their bodies to try to "cheat" and get a faster pull-up, and they just basically do a whole bunch of these jerk-motion pullups that seem like a half-arsed attempt that doesn't really accomplish what it's supposed to.

When I do pull-ups (or whatever the proper term is) on the pull-up bar I have installed in the doorway.. I do it slowly. Slowly pull myself up, slowly lower myself, and repeat until I can't do it anymore. Then I take a short break and go again.

So what's up with this crossfit nonsense? Is it just for show?

I guess that depends on if it's a muscle-up or not. Because for that one you need the motion.
If not, then I guess it's really just nonsense.

With regular training almost everyone can get to deadlift 1.5 to 2 times their body weight (I am about 82-83 Kg).

I've been before at 1.3 times, now back at 1.0 times, but there's somehow always something which will interrupt my schedule at some point, giving me a setback (last time was my move to France, and then the pandemic; next one will latest be my move back to the Netherlands). So not sure if I'll manage 2 times body weight (90 kg myself right now), but at least aiming for it still.

@The_J

Like for instance this

Seems like he's just going for speed, but is cheating to use his body motion to get in as many of these as possible. Seems like a waste of time

Fast foward to 1:42 in. I linked in the timestap but the forum doesn't seem to like it

How common is that sort of "workout routine"? I swear about 50% of the time I see a crossfit video, they are doing something stupid like that. But I'm not an expert in fitness, so it made me wonder if I'm just missing something.. And it's not like I"m seeking out these videos either, so it's possible I am just coming across the "look at the idiots working out" type videos pointing out those who are doing it wrong.

It seemed to be fairly common so I thought I'd ask if I am missing something. But could just be observational bias/etc.

Maybe just more people make stupid videos :dunno:?
I've seen a video of a friend of mine doing crossfit, and that didn't look like this. So not everyone does.
(and while I'm working out, I'm also aware that using motion is cheating, so I don't do it either ^^)

:dubious: I'm sure you didn't mean to use a person's sexual orientation as a pejorative.
I wouldn't have responded the way I did if I thought he did. But I'm a) not sure what was funny about it and b) I guess I'm cancelled anyway.
