Stability with editing rules?

Anybody thats turned on edit rules knows the dire warning that appears. Is it really that unstable? Are there certain areas you change safely and certain things you should avoid?
 
It's stable, in that it probably won't crash if you know where the files go. If you are only changing rules and vaules of units, there will be no problem (except for making a remarkably unbalanced scenario).
 
It means more for balance than stability. But stable is another way of looking at balance...

At least, that's how I've always taken it.
 
No, there's a number of things that can crash your game, which is why they have the warning. I have a bug in my mod right now that hits sometime in the Middle Ages and I have no idea what's causing it. The game just suddenly crashes to desktop with no warning or message.

But overall it's not that bad. Most errors result from the game not being able to find a graphic file, and it will usually give you a clue when that happens. So you should take that warning seriously and back up your mod as you go along, but don't be to paranoid about it.
 
Playing with the rules rarely causes a crash, but it can easily cause something to happen that you didn't predicted or intended.
 
If you only change values of existing things (e.g. citizens, civilizations, governments, units, improvements...) it is very stable.
If you want to add things then you nedd to know what you are doing
 
Adding things are dangerous, thats why i don't do it. But editing existing values are okay

(i only added two governments which works pretty well)

Not really, you just need to back up your previous work then test the additions. 9.5 times out of 10 everything will work out. It's just that the .5 can ruin alot of work.
