I was just wondering what types of starts people play out. Personally, i will normally play out any start, even if there is a serious disadvantage to myself. Adds to the challenge IMO. BTW, I only play on regent.

If the start has a river, and decent terrain(grassland, hills, forests) around it, then I will play it.

Most, unless if I'm on a 2 square island or something equally evil.

any start- if its good well then good, but if its bad ill take the challenge. Why just a few moments ago I started on a hill in the middle of the tundra, but watch-ill win

I've played out every start I've received. I have yet to be bitten by the "impossible start" bug.

I'll say, like your Ottoman Killer Game? :)

I've gotten a 6 square island before... So I restarted it.

I use Moonsinger's Mapfinder utility. My requirements are only that I have 1 food bonus and a river. If I were doing it without the utility, I'd probably settle for a river with some bonus grassland.

I voted the 2nd option, starts which have enough food, but it does vary, depending on the civ I'm playing, the level, barbarian activity, etc. If I start in the middle of a vast jungle, I quickly lose interest and restart.

i know what you mean about losing interest, but i think that every good start i have must be balanced with a start of little quality. so i keep playing unless the AI gets to be three or four times my size. then there is no point continuing (sp?)

Generally I hald out for a river and minimum one bonus food resource. Of course that doesn't mean the rest of the land will be that great but at least I'll have a decent start. Sometimes I'll start even if it looks bad and if the area around starts looking better I keep going.

Almost any start. If it's a bad one, i play it with even more fun! The only situation in which i quit is when a game looks boring for a lot of time, such as starting on an island surrounded by ocean tiles with no safe route to the mainland.

I used to play what I was given everytime. Now, I almost always play if there is a river nearby. I don't particularly go for tundra or jungle starts, but I may give them a go depending on how I'm feeling. Food bonuses are just that: a bonus (not a requirement).

food bonus is a wheat or a cow or game or fish or anything else that provides extra (bonus) food. Food is important as it allows your city to grow quicker and the bigger your city, the more commerce and shields it generates.
Commerce is for money, happyness and research; shields is for building units and buildings.

Almost any start, but that is not saying I'll play it all the way through.
