Starting Position

I think someone should log in for the turn today - it appears no one else did and I'm back and able to now so I will shortly if there is no other news. I'm sure Provo is having a nice trip too :)

I've just checked it and unless Team Maverick end their turn there is about 2hrs till the turn timer kicks it over. For those that haven't seen it yet you can check progress here

Today's turn is only really a warrior move and new screen shots. Which way are we moving it? 1SW I presume?

That's where I'd move it.
And I did. ;) It reveiled that Continuum is probably at the end of a [very short?] peninsula.

My guess is in red. For the unaltered screenie, check the turn thread (linky).

Where shall Mr. Warrior move next? To the wheat? To the plains hill? Elsewhere? Each darkened tile looks to be covered in forests so we won't get the hill bonus vision.

I don't know what turn animals appear, I'm always extremely hesitant about entering an unforested flatland tile with that first warrior though.

EDIT: And even unforested hills make me a little uneasy.

I'm too lazy to google it, but I think we still have a couple of turns before animals appear. I went ahead and kept to the forest. I plan on moving him SW next to gain some valuable coast linesight. Thoughts/Alternatives?

Southwest sounds great; I think animals appear at a hardcoded point, somewhere between turns 4-10, but we should hopefully be ok with any luck. Always could be the odd bear but think we can keep the warrior alive. Obviously we're on an interesting Peninsula here - or well, we'll see if the "heavy water-based world" theory holds merit now.

Edit: regarding turn timer issues - I think the vote will end up being not to shorten. But again I don't want to take forever - and more importantly I don't want random guys on other teams getting pissed and venting on public threads that *our* team is taking too long. So are we ok with multiple people playing a turn if they're online and it hasn't been played yet, so we get our turns done in a timely manner? As long as we have consensus on where to, say, move our scouts then I'd be ok with anyone logging in.

I'm not sure, the idea of anyone logging in and doing anything is a little unsettling to me. I'm more of an organized-type of player, where we discuss and have one person do the move. I can play again in about eight hours (game looks to be down at the moment), but I reckon we can do this early exploring without needing weighing in from everyone in an effort to keep the game rolling along. After all, the other teams are upset at a turn every 1.5 days when in PBEM we'd be lucky to do a turn a week with six teams...

I agree very much that the other teams being annoyed at the game being slow is really their own problem - the last demogame did take like a week per turn as people posted, and we're rolling in less than 2 days (and will be even when the game gets going).

I'll respect your wishes that I won't log in and move anything/end turns - we can keep it with one turnplayer, that works just as well by me. Of course Provolution probably gets to finish out his series of turns when he's back too.

I like moving to the plains hill actually, for a solid view of the sea and since it looks like we can move NorthWest again after that.

Edit: that was the Dutch getting more land area right? They must have 13 total land tiles in their capital? It's really looking like everyone was given about the same start with (corn/rice/wheat) and (gold/gems/silver)

I do hope the Stonehenge race works out, other teams are doing a lot of posturing, but then again we're doing it close to as early as can be. Of course if we discover a valid reason for something else with short-term exploration we still have time to switch things up, though I still like our plan for now.

Well, I won't mind if you want to play some turns. I think what I'm most concerned about is saying "Anyone can log in and do anything." As long as we delegate someone as the turn player, whomever it is, should be the one doing the things.

In my own opinion, of course. :)

lurker's comment: Quatronia has been the last team to play 3 turns in a row. Having both RegentMan and Earthling authorized to play the turn might speed up the game for everyone.

But each time, the time it took to play the turn has gone down. In light of this, and since the rules only seem to talk about warring double-moving, I went ahead and played the next turn after playing the last one. I'm sorry if this does break the rules (admins) or feels unfair (team). I won't do it again if it is an issue.

But the border expansion has really turned this game into a different beast, so I couldn't resist with the obvious next place to move the warrior:

Workboat = :goodjob:

The good news is I'm done getting into trouble over the Pope and child rape and such because I think for my own sake I simply won't argue with trolls anymore; I just don't consider debates over a turn timer to be trolling on the same level. So to be clear I'm happy with RegentMan still being the turn player for now - and we'll try not to eat up the whole clock. Other teams can be angry if they want but we shouldn't be that long - and if RegentMan is ok I could even take any turns myself (move the warrior + screenshots) if we've gone too close to the end of the timer. And also this is a temporary arrangement until Provo is back anyway right now, and as we get more into the meat of the game I think we'll have a regular rotation, but thanks for the reminder.

Edit: interesting xpost. No, it's not considered a double move to move twice at this point - that's only if we're at war - or at least certainly doesn't matter now when we haven't even met anyone! I really think there still wasn't a restriction on "double-moving settlers" or the like - I think it is only when at war, but I guess we could ask on the main forum later if something like that comes up.

double edit: We're going to need to have some discussion and decisions to make over our path/goals. It's not looking like Stonehenge is going to be as useful of a priority anymore. At the same time, the Colossus is still going to be absolutely vital, whoever gets that wonder will be head and shoulders ahead now because this now seems like such a clear water-heavy map.

Also really interested about some teams on the main forum and their braggings - I really, really, REALLY hope that, say, India didn't actually get a monopoly on stone and marble resources, that would be awfully tough. But it's looking like we have to rethink our preferences and goals on exploration and expansion. Fast expansion via boats versus a Colossus build is something to consider.

If we're not going to build Stonehenge we also have to come up with a better tech to tech next too (Mysticism not much use in the short term if we want Bronze Working/Sailing). Do we also want to consider starting a newer/permanent strategy thread? Or keep it here but maybe poll the team on long-term planning like this?

Let's have a strategy thread, methinks.

Oracling into Metal Casting then building colossus is always out there. We wouldn't be the only ones trying it though. I dare say approximately 5 other teams would be going for the same thing. There's no particular reason we couldn't win such a race, but large sacrifices would certainly have to be made.

Consider that we're probably not looking at long spindly islands here like the AI makes for archipelago maps and really lend themselves to the colossus. This is a stunty round island where cities will all be coastal, but still have a large amount of land available to them. In general, it's still better to work cottages than coast I think, even with colossus.

To me, stonehenge was about the charismatic trait more than the border pops and it isn't continent limited. You'll want to have monuments everywhere anyway, so it's just a question of whether it is better to build stonehenge or individual monuments, which I guess comes down to how many cities will get built early. I'm not really sure how new information about the starting location changes that decision. It may be that waiting to get boats online and then explore a little before we build a 4th city means we have the time to build stonehenge without costing much. Or it may be that the couple of strong city spots we have early on means that we can knock those monuments out quick then down the line when cities on the other island get lots of support it's not a big deal to put up monuments there either.

Based on what we see here, I think it is highly likely that all the other teams are on an island of similar size with many instances of a single food resource, a single hunting or mining happiness resource, and a single calendar resource. Stone and marble, if they are to be found, are probably on that other island we see. It may be that everyone sees that other island the same way we do and that the fight for world domination takes place over there. Or it may be that island is just another stepping stone.

P.S. This probably changes things enough that we could come up with some alternate plans and vote on them.

Coming up with some plans to vote on sounds good.

I agree Stonehenge isn't entirely worthless, certainly the happiness + generally saving production on monuments counts for something (along with denying another team the wonder)- and it doesn't slow down our tech much. It does slow down building boats/more cities quicker, but perhaps getting the first workboat out is enough.

By the way, due to a weird glitch/exploity situation I'm sure everyone knows about, it may be quite possible that our little home island here cannot be invaded by enemy galleys; no threats until astronomy in other words.

IIRC this is due to the fact that galleys can't enter enemy ocean tiles - we can go through ocean tiles in our cultural borders (ie 1N 2E of the capital) to get to the "mainland" but an enemy cannot. So certainly land military/barbarians/etc... are not going to be much concern at all early on -teching+expanding+claiming land will be key.

I or someone should probably check what F8 demographics has to say - the % of total land we have, to get a feel for total land tiles.

A city built on that one off-island square we can see with 1 culture pop would enable galleys to come across. In general I feel pretty safe on that front though.
