Steam and It's Hatred for me.

That's nothing. I actually had to BUY A SECOND COPY of Civ 5 because I couldn't access my original Steam account.

And I have one copy I can't even use.
That isn't smart. You were better off contacting Steam about you not being able to access your original account. With the right info they can help you out.
It could've saved you some money ;)

Steam is great, but for those of you who can't stand it, there's a Steamless version of Civ V on the Mac App Store.

Doesn't the Mac version use Steam? I didn't know that :) I thought the Mac-version also used Steam.
(Unfortunately the Mac version runs very slow, is very badly updated and only runs on Mac-computers)

You can buy it on steam, or buy it from Apple's personal Mac app store. If you get it from the Mac App store, it's steam less.

So why don't they release a Windows version that doesn't require Steam?
When Windows 8 comes around that might be a possibility. But at the moment not yet.

Although we can expect the "blah blah, why do we need to buy it through the Microsoft Marketplace*. Why do I have to register with Microsoft to play a Firaxis game, it's a disgrace! Etc."

(* Or whatever the name is)

The Steam requirement is the main reason I never bought Civ5. There were other reasons, but if not for Steam, I probably would have given in to curiosity and bought a copy by now.

It's absurd that I would be required to tolerate more outside interference with, and more intrusive invasions of, my computer and personal affairs just to play some stupid game than I would to pay my taxes on line.

My point is they could easily count them with a simple programming change.
Whiel that would be nice it would also probably be easy for people to cheat.

Steam's offline mode is incredibly un-userfriendly. There are ways to get it to work but you need to jump through some hoops.

The problem is that if there's anything at all wrong with the configuration (the "credentials" that get saved each time you close Steam) then offline mode is not going to work unless Steam can connect to its servers. For example, if Steam crashed or didn't shut down properly last time you used it in online mode, you probably won't be able to launch it in offline mode without an internet connection.
Its more annoying than anything else. It certainly isn't difficult to use unless it bugs out.

That is entirely your own fault. As mentioned above you should have contacted Steam support about the issue, there is also an account name and password recovery thing like every other account system has too.

So why don't they release a Windows version that doesn't require Steam? Clearly this proves that the arguments supporting the Steam requirement are 100% BS (as those of us advocating for the option to use civ5 without Steam tried to tell people).

The Mac app store version does not have achievements or multiplayer or anything else built using Steamworks. So no, the same reasons still apply.

But why does civ5 have to have any of those features? There are plenty of people here who don't care about such features. Many of us would use a non-steam version that didn't have those things.

I tried that, but they couldn't help me because I lack authentication or something like that.

Why does Civ 5 have to have mod support? Its just a time consuming extra on the developer's part and many people don't use it anyway. Especially being able to look at and download them ingame, entirerly unecessary. I couldn't care less if Firaxis made a trimmed down version for Windows, you should ask them for it.

Pity. I lost the password to my account before. Quick chat with some guy and my password was reset and I was on my way.

Could always by a Mac.
