So in the top right corner of the browser, there was a new button. I clicked it. Now I'm in XBox Live.

What happened?

2012 happened, if you have a TV. Hit the power icon to get out of it.

2012 is almost over. That there's a new way to use Steam doesn't bother me at all, but it looks a bit too similar to Live. Also the power icon in the middle of the screen and giant mouse are kinda annoying for the web broweser.

That is because it is designed for TV (controller, really) use only and emulates the UI for PS3 and Xbox 360. Unfortunately, and just like both of those, it is a horrible waste of space and takes bloody forever to scroll through any list that isn't short (like your Friend's list... a grid pattern would be thousands of times more efficient).

It would also be great if you could disable the big picture button because it is, well, kind of big, and right next to useful buttons for minimizing or closing Steam and is completely useless on a 22" monitor.

Yeah, it's for controllers. The fact that it was premiered along with a sale for controller-enabled games was kind of how I put it together. And that controller right there in the image. . .

What controller is that. by the way? I think it looks like Logitech? Nevermind, I found it :p

... why would someone use a controller with their PC?

Comfort, IMO. I really hate sitting hunched over a keyboard and leaning into the monitor. That may have more to do with my pitiful chair and desk though.

Some of the Steam games outright tell you that a controller is much better than the M+K - Castle Crashers, for example.

I think a few 3rd person games probable work better with a controller too.

This kind of goes back to the days when joysticks were more popular. I remember those being kind of popular among the serious gamer population.

Its been available for a couple of months or so now.

Its for people playing console ports on their TVs.

I think their market is people who surf the internet through an appliance that has controller support, so Steam can sell them lower end games. There's also people who do the huge big screen HD display with a home theater PC.

I've had it for a while through beta, but most PC games automatically use controllers these days anyway. My 360 controller is always plugged in and most games just automatically detect it when I move the joystick. I use my controller on LA Noire and Dead Island.
