Steam

It is if you want to get certain games (e.g. Civ 5, Empire Total War).

No, you seem to have this misconception that Steam and the games that require Steam are two separate things. If you want those games, you want Steam, if you don't want Steam, you don't want those games. Simple.

Deal with it, and I'm not saying that to be mean, as its not going to change. If you really don't want them to include Steam, write the developers and publishers a polite but stern letter (letter, not e-mail) saying you won't buy their games if they include Steamworks. Otherwise you aren't going to accomplish anything.

Irrelevant. Halo also gets really high ratings and its not exactly the most inventive thing of all time nor did they take many risks and try to make new and large changes to the gameplay.

 I can't think of anything in civ5 other than the steam cloud saving that couldn't be done without steam.

They used Steamworks for Steam Cloud, multiplayer networking, achievements, and a few other things. Yeah, they could have developed these themselves (taking more time and money) or used other programs (GFWL? No thanks!), but they didn't. The game uses Steamworks and that isn't going to change.

And that doesn't matter whatsoever. What does matter is the fact that the game was developed using Steam. That means Steam is part of Civ 5. I have had this argument before, and do not wish to again. Suffice to say that if Steam is integrated into a game, it is part of the game. No buts, no "but the game could have been done without Steam", no -- none of that. It includes it, which means it is part of the game, and really what you think about the inclusion of Steam is at that point unimportant.

I agree with you, a lot of the stuff that Steam provides can be self-rolled by the developers. That fact is irrelevant in this discussion though.

The point I am trying to make is that when a game requires the use of Steam, Steam becomes a part of the game -- not just an optional addition.

So, when you are put into knowledge that a game requires Steam, you know that to play the game you will have to use Steam. This in my mind means that if you still want the game, you also support the use of Steam in the game. So it may not be that you necessarily want Steam, it is more so that you are content with it being present.

If you do not wish to support the use of Steam in games, you cannot just whine about Steam while playing said games. You have to show your dissatisfaction by voting with your money. That's what it all comes down to -- its your money that's speaking for or against Steam in games.

I just got Civ V that has Steam. But I did not install that yet. Can you make your profile private? That would be the only issue I have with that so far. If not, I just will not put anything on the profile.

You can set it as only your friends can view your profile.

That's good. Does anybody want to be my friend when I install it? :)

Sorry for hijacking this thread but this is a Steam question. Whenever I start it up, it always leaves this blank rectangle in the middle of my desktop. It only goes away if I kill the process. What is it?

No idea, try Steam support.
