It seems theyve succeeded in growing part of a human heart from stem cells!
Lets pour more money into this! Screw morals! The babies are already aborted anyway.

British scientists say they have succeeded in growing part of a human heart from stem cells in a medical research first with far-reaching implications.

The researchers say it could mean replacement tissue for transplants could become available as quickly as three years, The (London) Guardian reported Monday. Reaching that level, however, will depend on the outcome of animal trials scheduled for this year, the newspaper said.

Looking even further ahead, Magdi Yacoub, professor of cardiac surgery at Imperial College London whose team is conducting the research, said growing a whole, functioning heart appears within the realm of possibility in the not-so-distant future.

"It is an ambitious project but not impossible. If you want me to guess I'd say 10 years," Yacoub said. "But experience has shown that the progress that is happening nowadays makes it possible to achieve milestones in a shorter time. I wouldn't be surprised if it was some day sooner than we think."

The World Health Organization said 15 million people died of cardiovascular disease in 2005. By 2010, it is estimated that 600,000 people worldwide will need replacement heart valves.

That should be quoted.

But nice find, Xan. I was wondering what had come of stem cell research...

I stole it from cfcbot as usual.

Great, now fat rich people can eat even more fatty food knowing they'll be able to get a new heart.

But those fat peoplpe will eat more thus more people will have jobs feeding them and the doctors will specialize and make more money that they will spend giving more people jobs to produce things and then with all these people making money they can afford to go the bar and have drunk sex making more aported babies to make more heart parts.

Everyone wins! Well except the religious people, but no one gives a damn about them anyway.

A longer article

By using chemical and physical nudges, the scientists first coaxed stem cells extracted from bone marrow to grow into heart valve cells.

I believe this means they used adult stem cells. No killing required. If taken from your own marrow there shouldn't be any risk of rejection either.

Sad to see this immoral research going on when Adult Stem Cells have been around much longer.

I can even imagine the future... 'Limb hacked while on the war?' 'No problem, we can grow a new one for you for a cheap price.'

Adult stem cells have been around longer than embrionic stem cells? If you can square that triangle perhaps you could have a stab at the old poser about the chicken and the egg?

Yes saving peoples lives is always immoral, more so when you use embrotic stem cells because they are people too. Except they aren't.

 QTF

Come on people, frozen embryos are just that... frozen embryos. Sure they can become a person, but they can also become a new liver. That is the whole point of stem cells. They have not yet stemmed off into any sort of final, determined form.

Those poor, little, unconscience, unalive, unfeeling little bundles of cells!

How dare we sacrifice them for the most promising field of science! ;)

EDIT: God, four people just jumped all over him...

If you ask me who I feel more sympathetic for, I would choose the thousands who die waiting on the transfer list annually over the cells of an unborn fetus. I think when you're about to die, you care less about morals.

This still implies there is something morally wrong, which I would suggest isn't true.

I was describing it from her point of view. The way I see it, denying the progression of stem cell research is like murdering of the thousands of lives that could be saved.

Indeed. I maybe wouldn't say murder, but I would say it seems morally reprehensible to deny such possibilities.
