StKNES5: A New Lease on NES

People of Illinois! We rule!

This bumsquat world can not match our ferocity and incredible hacklust! In two turns we have had two total victories, we have defeated and eradicated every Iroquoius to the end of the world without losing a single batallion! We are truly the best!

So stop thinking of our culture as average and have some confidence in your leadership!

To Malaysia
From the GDC

Until you sign a treaty ensuring that you do not spread into the Southern Pacific Ocean we are agreeable to that. Until then the war shall continue. Australia is defended and the people of the region are ready to meet all intrusions.

To: GDC
From: Malaysia
Is this your offer? You keep Papua, and I don't expand further into the south Pacific? If that's your offer, you've got a deal.

Oh and the two small islands to the south of New Guinea

They're yours. PEACE!!! WOOHOO!!!

Okay Sheep, now that we're back on friendly terms, hows about a trade route sometime in the future?

And Kamilian, cancel the economy point of covert actions against the GDC and spend it on Balazis, unless it's too late.

Edit your orders if you need to. Otherwise, I will carry out whatever orders I have, even if it mean continuing hostilities despite the oficially-signed peace.

Alright.

NEW GDC SECRET ORDERS (you can read them just pretend that you never did)

Defend the nations.
Give the people in Western New Guinea a vote to see if they wish to become part of the GDC or an independent nation under protectorship of the GDC military until they can defend themseleves.
Take the two islands in the peace bargain with Malaysia
Spend all the sp on upgrading the military with 1/3 of it going to the navy as the Generals and Admirals see fit.

Continue the spread of pro-unification propoganda in Perth and the GDC.

Update 19 - 400 BCE

A siege of Jerusalem has culminated in the Afridi Pashtuns and their army storming into the city after breaking down some segments of the fortifications. The same has occurred as has been happening in the countryside – rapes, massacres, looting. Many of the libraries of the city have been looted by the barbarians, their contents either being burned along with the buildings or being carried out and taken out of the city. The city was occupied for only a duration of weeks, lucky for the people of Israel, due to a successful series of Israelite counteroffensives, including liberation of Tel-Aviv and – of course – the capital itself. The quick liberation if Jerusalem was also hastened by the influx of troops and/or volunteers from Austria, Byzantium, Portugal, Zagreb who streamed into the city’s harbor and fought Afridi troops throughout the city. Nevertheless, most of the country is still occupied, and the sacking of Jerusalem has taken a huge toll on the psyche – and culture and education – of Israel.
Though some territory has been reclaimed, and the three free cities joined territorially again, hunger persists and has taken another 2,000 people.

After the incursion into the city, a man named Jesus Christ began gathering some popularity, claiming that the Pashtuns invaded so that Israelites and all the peoples of the lands invaded by the Afridis would pay for all their past transgressions and sins. A small group of ultra-traditional, fiercely-patriotic inhabitants of the city had, however, blamed him for murder and treason and hung him on a cross. A cult of followers remains, however, though they have since fled westward to avoid further persecution. They have parted ways to help spread their beliefs easier, going to Greece, Italy, Benghazi, and Portugal.

A Malagasy relief force attacked and liberated Socotra.

Yemen has attacked the Israelite beachhead on the Arabic Peninsula and has managed to gain control of it totally. However, this move on the part of the government is not supported universally. Not only Yemeni Jews but also non-Jewish segments of the Arabic country have spoken out against the invasion. Primarily the upper class is vocal about it, and even the majority of the clergy opposes the move. Reasons for their opposition are the massacres that the Afridis have initiated in the Israelite land, deemed as far too excessive, bitterness over the initial repression of Iraqis (Babylonian Arabs) during the first years of the Pashtun Empire’s rule over that land, and the simple fact that with Israel, a stable trade was possible, while with Pashtun Empire, it can’t be certain that a trade agreement would last. It’s quite possible that a revolution will occur unless the government withdraws from Israel’s colony.

Afridi troops have made another push, this time into Byzantine Anatolia. There were only several major Byzantine regiments there, as most have been dedicated to either withdrawal into Italy or trying to fight back the Bulgar invasion.
Naval engagements have occurred across the seas in the vicinity of Yemen and the Pashtun Empire between Israelite and Pashtun fleets. The Israelite fleets have been more successful because their sailors are more experienced, knowing the etiquette of war better, while the Pashtun fleets have been successful up to now primarily due to surprise-raids on settlements.

Due to the sudden end of the initially-successful occupation of Jerusalem and its reversal, morale among the various people in Pashtun control is at a very dangerous level. In the city of Babylon, Iraqis and Babylonians have joined together in demanding independence from the Empire. The city’s Persian governor has fled after violence against the Persian tax collectors and nobles and the Afridi police officials has flared up across the city. Persians are, of course, happy that they have so much power, but they demand more power than just acting on the whim of the Pashtun warlords – they want their own empire, ruled completely by Persians only. The non-Afridi Pashtuns likewise are very restless: it’s not just the fact that they are considered lower-class to the Afridis, who were just a small frontier tribe before all this happened, but also the fact that while the Pashtuns control the army, despite its multi-ethnic composition, it is not the Pashtuns that administer over the areas of the Empire. In the north, meanwhile, the Turkics want to be governed by their own, as well. Persian noble families that settled in those areas have been harassed by the Turkic tribes around them.

Externally, the Pashtun Empire is also being isolated. It’s already obvious that most of the Mediterranean countries are anti-Pashtun, but the other neighbors are also increasingly antagonistic. Egypt is concerned about possibility of invasion into their land as well and the devastation that invasion could bring, and in the north, the Turkic countries have united into one country, Turkistan, with the goal of preventing a further growth of Pashtun power. In Greater Armenia, a revolution has overthrown the pro-Pashtun government because of the people’s outrage at the atrocities committed by the Pashtuns in Israel and the government’s refusal to act in protest of the massacres. The new government is much more decentralized republic and has renounced the alliance with the barbarians.

The union of the Roman Republic and the Byzantine Empire has taken place, the Roman Senate signing with the Byzantine Emperor just as Bulgar troops seize the rest of European Byzantium. For now, the new Roman-Byzantine Empire is thus truncated, at least temporarily, to consisting of only Italy and Sicily.
Though it only consists of only one part of its intended territory, a constitution has been proclaimed, making it a decentralized monarchy with republican characteristics. Byzantium and Rome, the two provinces, are to have their own senates separately, who limit the Emperor’s power.

The loss of Byzantium, however, has proven to have an effect on the entire Mediterranean, with the exception of Portugal, France, and Israel. It has been in this city that the administrators, scholars, and educators of the Mediterranean nations have been learning. Being occupied and sacked by the Bulgars, it has basically become off-limits to the new generations, provoking an educational and cultural crisis and stagnation throughout the region.

In the land designated for Bulgar settlement, called “Bulgaria”, by the architects of the Kiev pact, the Bulgars have streamed in very rapidly, now consisting of 84% of its population, while the Hellenes consist of 10%, Dacians 2%, and Slavs 4%.

Though the Bulgars have taken over Byzantium successfully, their empire is imploding. It is questionable as to whether it is collapsing because of or despite the Kiev Pact.
The states created by the Pact have begun grabbing more land at the expense of the Bulgar warlords. Since they are puppet states, it would be no problem, but the governments are increasingly shifting against the ethnic Bulgars, elevating the local ethnicities to higher positions of power and ousting Bulgar warlords out of estates.
Furthermore, the armies of Eire have been more successful, liberating much of northern Brandenburg, though Berlin remains in Bulgar hands.
EIRE: -400 Infantry, -200 Cavalry

Eire has begun organizing its own administration in the lands it has liberated. Only Denmark has sent delegations to the Parliament so far, however. The majority of Brandeburgers expect the Eire occupation to be only temporary until Berlin is liberated and the independent Brandenburger government restored.

The Greater Democratic Commonwealth has issued a referendum in Western Papua. The Western Papuans chose for the future of their much-disputed land:
Protectorate of the GDC – 15%
Fully independent country – 83%
Autonomous status within the GDC – 2%
The GDC forces and administrators are expected to leave Western Papua immediately.

Peace has been signed between GDC and Malaysia, with the GDC getting two islands south of Papua.

The Nihonese have not been able to bounce back from their huge defeats. Invasion of the island of Kyushu dealt the final blow to Nihonese morale at home. Stripped of their empire and now attacked at home, the Nihonese people are left with shattered pride and have revolted. The military, also mostly destroyed by the recent offensives of the Allies, has refused to continue the fight and have joined the revolution. A Republic has been proclaimed, this one making the legislature elected rather than consisting of the aristocrats.

Malaysian explorers have begun to venture westward, reaching so far only the southern tip of Travancore.

A religion called Buddhism, promoting peace/pacifism and unity with the world and nature, has emerged in Nepal. It is similar in ways to Malaysia’s Balism.

The rapid spread of this religion in Nepal comes at a most inopportune moment: the armies of Travancore had swarmed into Nepal, and the Nepalese Army, still uncertain about how to defend themselves while remaining true to pacifism, was too distracted and disconcerted to even put up much of a defense at all. The mountains have prevented a full takeover, and Kathmandu remains under Nepalese control still as well. A few attempts to penetrate into the north, which gets more mountainous the more north one goes, have brought only casualties, as the Travancori army is not accustomed to this kind of harsh mountain weather.

Meanwhile, in Western Travancore, about half the nobles that spoke out against the redistribution of land have mysteriously disappeared. Some speculate that they simply left the country (but where would they go, with barbarians to the west and the country to the north being invaded?) but the majority of Western Travancoris believe that they had been imprisoned and/or killed by the government. The remaining half of the outspoken nobles has gone into hiding, supposedly meeting clandestinely here and there at small congresses throughout Western Travancore.

Aztec ships left port for New Illinois, for some yet-to-be-determined purpose. In Roanoke, a huge battalion of troops is dressed in Aztec garb. Why?

Meanwhile, the Aztec Army has crossed into the Maya lands again. The Mayan troops are still integrating together, but they all agree that the Aztec government and military are their greatest enemy. Whatever disagreements they may have or different views, all Maya generals and soldiers know that when Aztecs invade, they have to work together.
Anyway, the Aztec invasion force was successful in capturing only border areas. The Maya, as mentioned, may be just integrating together, but they are determined to defend their people and the Polytheists from Aztec tyranny. Not to mention the fact that the Aztec invasion force is about 1,000 smaller than the Maya army, and as the only threat is the Aztecs, the vast majority of Maya forces were near the border, anyway.

The invasion has caused the exiles from the Aztec Empire to swell the ranks of the Maya Empire to fight the oppressors that they were once proud to call their government.

In Southern Provinces, though, Traditionalist temples are being rebuilt, but, again, the Traditionalists remain aloof from the government and anger towards Quetzalist settlers persists.

Speaking of the Aztec government, a new restructuring has begun as the North and South Provinces are being divided into somewhat-smaller units. Administrators are being prepared for Provincial Councils to be formed in the Provinces, and for the first Imperial Council to be established once the Provincial Councils are firmly in place.

New Illini reign of terror continues against the Iroquois, Illini settlers displacing them as they move in, and bandits (though some of these bandits had High Saint clothes) attacking the Iroquois on roads wherever they go.
The completion of the People Farms has caused a major population boom, so there are even more people as candidates to settle in the north.

As the Malagasy have deployed forces to their new territories, the extents of the rebellions have contracted significantly.

Orders are due on Sunday, 10 AM Central US Time. If it happens that I am unable to update that day, I will notify you and you will have exactly one more day (24 hours), to still send orders or change orders or whatever.

Darwin, you are completing your Eagle Warrior Monument this turn. You cannot already start another project, because you are still doing work (finishing, but still working on it) on this one.

People didn’t get story bonuses this turn. The people who did not write a story are getting a level knocked off from either confidence or culture. This turn, it means that unfortunately only one player's nation doesn't get the knock-off. Write those stories, people!

Edit: Map Edit - forgot to liberate Socotra on the map. Treat that lil' island as purple, not gray-colored. Sorry.

Kamilian- I didn't get anything from my strategy for getting foreign Jews to come? Not only did I use speaches delivered by messenger birds, but I actually dedicated part of my navy to their transportation. Also, I really don't want to be a complainer, but was this whole war just designed to reduce my stats? The war has not affected any other PC's, my strategys have not even been taken into consideration at many times, old allies with blood and economic ties have been stabbing me in the back, an group of barabarians not even consisting of a nation have overun my country, and I am getting ridiculously huge reductions to my confidence, culture, and population (you actually mentioned in another thread befor the invasion that you thought Israel's confidence was too high), even though I always send orders on time, always include some kind of strategy, have always written some sort of story (with the exception of the turn right after you said that story bonuses wouldn't be done), and have taken advantage of every imaginable connection I might have with PC nation to get them involved in the war. Sorry once again for being such a complainer, but I was just starting to get a little bit more than I could take (I was even going to quit this NES after I saw the rise of Christianity, that is until I noticed that it wasn't spreading in Israel).

From Eire
To people of Brandenburg
We will grant you soverignty if you wish, though your rightful lands still rest in the hands of the enemy. By granting soverignty, we will abandon our intentions of funding infastructure, education, and urbanization programs, as well as withdraw all forces from the lands of Brandenburg.

From the Greater DC

If you do not interefere on Western Papua then we shall ensure that trade is built up asap.

To Western Papua

From Caribbean Empire
To New Illini

To Aztec Empire
please stop your violence against the mayan people, they have not wronged you, is there no way to end this war between your two great natons

OOC great update btw

To: GDC
From: Malaysia
We will not interfere, though we believe that the will of the people of Western Papua should be respected. We will start a trade route this turn, if that is ok with you.

To: Nihonese Republic
From: Allied forces of Malaysia, Vietnam, and Chinese Nations

Here are our terms for peace:
-We will return Kyushu and Shikoku to you.
-Okinawa and Sakhalin will remain under Malaysian control, but they will be free ports that any nation can base ships in.
-The Chinese-Choson Empire and the Choson Republic will get to decide if they want to return to pre-war boundaries, remain as they are, or unify.
-Malaysia will be permitted to teach Balism to the people of Nihon.
-Nihon will not be permitted to expand off of their four main islands, though it can trade as much as it wants.
-An NAP between all of the nations involved in this war will be signed to ensure continued peace in the Pacific.

Kamilian, do I have to pay economy points to build cities?

From Western Papua
To GDC:
So you're saying that you're invalidating the very same election that you initiated? Ah, the hypocrisy of the Greater... ehem... "Democratic" Commonwealth is revealed.
Even Nihon under the Emperors gave us more freedom than you offer.

From Western Papua
To Malaysia:
Is Balism not a religion that promotes democracy, liberty, balance?
If the GDC forces us into their country against our will, (especially after the election that confirmed that we don't want to be ruled by them), how does it promote the ideals of Balism?

From NPCs helping Israel
To Israel:
We will continue sending what help we can. The Bulgar Empire is on its last legs in Europe. Do not worry: the same fate will befall the Pashtun Empire sooner or later.

From Greater Dacia
To Israel:
They have reached nothing of ours.

From Greater Armenia and Khazaria
To Israel:
We will not sit idly by as the Afridis destroy recklessly civilization, particularly one as rich as that of Israel.

From Yemen
To Israel:
We will not withdraw from lands that are rightfully ours.

From Nihon
To Allies:
We agree to all terms but the one forbidding expansion. We will agree not to encroach on territory already ruled by other powers. But any un-claimed territory should be fair and open game.

OK, first off, foreign Jews were part of those "international legions", let's call them, that came swarming into Jerusalem and helped liberate the city and some of the coast, including Tel-Aviv.

Secondly, this war was not designed just to lower your stats. I don't give a rat's ass how high or low anyone stats are, as long as it happened legitimately, through no mistake of mine or players' cheating. If I really wanted to destroy you, Jerusalem would be fully occupied. Notice the Pashtuns came in, looted and raped, and quickly left because of the counter-offensive. If I had a goal of destroying you, trust me, it would have happened. I try to avoid biases, but the one bias that I stick with is that NPC nations or barbarians will never, ever destroy completely a PC nation. This does not in any way imply that they will never have wars, that they will never invade, that they will never try to weaken or partition you or whatever.
NPCs can get killed all the time, as you saw with the nations that New Illinois destroyed, that the Bulgars steamrolled over, and that the Pashtuns attacked. But PCs, human players, are exempt from this. I would expect my players to cherish - well, ok, maybe not cherish but at least respect and acknowledge - this leeway and luxury I offer.

I did mention that your stats got high way too fast, but that was because it did get too easy to raise your education, confidence, culture. Write a paragraph story and right there you get an entire level. Keep doing it and within less than a few turns, you'll have the highest confidence or culture level or both. I was not pinpointing you to say "your stats are ridiculous. I'm gonna make up some bogus barbaric empire, built it into a superpower really fast, and attack just to take you down a notch or two". I was saying objectively that it was too easy to raise the confidence and culture stats in particular, and I simply used your stat as an example (when I said that, I believe your confidence was "Cult of Personality", which was the highest level). I would think that I had a right to adjust my rules if I saw that it got way too easy for someone, anyone (it could've been Aztecs or Eire for all I care - but your nation at the moment had that highest stat, so I used you. Sue me), to increase their stuff. God knows I change the rules like every turn because of something or other, and it's annoying, but there is no way in hell I'm gonna let stat-raising become a simple walk in the park. This NES will have challenges. I try not to make stuff impossible, but if it's gonna be a pushover, then it really says something about my NES-moderating style, and that "something" is certainly not good.
It may seem like way too big of a coincidence for me to mention your high stat and then like start an invasion, but that's all it was, honestly, a coincidence.

Why is this not happening to a PC nation, you ask?
Well, let's consider the fact that the only PC nation other than you is Travancore, led by blackheart, who signed agreements with the Pashtun Empire and in fact collaborated in the partition of Pakistan. It's a matter of circumstance and coincidence that the Pashtuns were more willing to keep their arrangements in the east than they were willing so in the west.

Furthermore, the loss of population, confidence, culture, is not that ridiculous when you think about it. If a population is being massacred, then of course it's gonna drop. If it's starving, it will drop. And if someone stormed into the country's capital and looted the temples, libraries, museums, schools, and pillaged the city, then there would of course be a drop in culture (a lot of things got burned or stolen), and there would certainly be a collapse in confidence/morale, because typically, if the enemy gets into the capital itself, it would make the people scared that this really is the end.
And this, it's not just happening to you, if you read the update.
The capture of Byzantium by the Bulgar barbarians totally crushed the education of half the Mediterranean since the main institutions were there for the region, and that place had a lot of cultural influence, so the other peoples' culture dropped, too.
It is not just happening to you.

Your strategies have been taken into consideration, and sometimes they just didn't work. Who the hell heard of a fleet in the Mediterranean getting all the way to the Indian Ocean in one turn in a NES that's still in ancient/pre-medieval times, for instance? You had to know that at least that one was flawed. If I allowed it to happen right away, I would be totally throwing the laws of physics, reality, geography, and everything else out the window and this would essentially become a purely-fantasy game w/ a glaring lack of even a hint of realism.

As for your stories and strategies, I like them. They're kick-ass. This turn, even, you were the one single player that wrote a story. But sometimes, even if your army is very determined to defend its homeland and leaders, if it is vastly-outnumbered, the fight will sooner or later turn in favor of the enemy.

Don't complain to me about PC nations not joining the war effort on your side. That's on them, not me.
If you meant to say NPC nations, well, you gotta make some offers, too, to get them encouraged to join you. I mean if someone sees the options "well I could join this small, less-powerful country or this huge militarized power", they're gonna be swayed closer to the more militarized, huge power, unless the smaller one either offers them something for the help or successfully appeals to their morals.

As for quitting because of Christianity, it's kind of a bogus reason to quit, even if you thought that the rise of Christianity was intended to be like the ultimate destruction of Judaism.
Quit because you feel I'm generally unfair, because I ignore orders, because I'm unwilling to listen and respond to suggestions and questions. But not because of a simple plot device that was practically random-event, which I remind you that I did say I would do on the front page, in the rules post (I said you can make up your own religions, but that I would start the ones that were existent in real-life as well).

It may seem like I'm screaming, but I'm not. It just caught me off-guard to see all that.

No, cities will be rising on their own.

To Western Papua
From the Greater Democratic Commonwealth

We will not abandon the Western Papuan province of the Greater Democratic Commonwealth to those who seek to ally with the Oriental aggressor nations like Nihon and Malaysia. We will ensure that the Western Papuan province is and remains GDC.

As of this moment the 'elections' rigged by the Nihonese living in Western Papua is struck from the record. Using Executive Order 34534 the province of Western Papua is now under martial law and all illegal residents will be forcibly evicted from the Greater Democratic Commonwealth.
