Hi All,
While reading through various tips and strategies, I found out that one can actually stop the growth of a city. Now why and when would one do that? There's much more to the city screen then I realize, I suppose. Can anyone explain this thing about growth?
Thanx!

For future reference, you could consolidate all your questions in one thread, as not to saturate the forum.

That said, you should halt growth when you're facing the happy cap and to a lesser extent the health cap. Once you go past the happy cap you'll end up with rebels or unhappy people - people who don't work for you and contribute to a nasty adverse event (if you play with events on)

A good way to cull the flock early on is to use slavery - whip 2 people when you reach a red face and you're back to a neutral position and have a new building/unit to show for it too.

If you are at your happiness cap in your city, then any further citizens will refuse to work because they are unhappy. You are better off working non-food tiles (like mines) or running a specialist.

You're right. I am sorry about that. It's just that questions pop into my head while reading and reading. Is whippinh the same as clicking on the angry citizens? Man, it truly is an indepth game.... No wonder people love it!

Whipping is when you have a Slavery civic* and you want to sacrifice some population to finish a work order. Which is a great way to build lots of stuff quickly and keep your population in check.

Enter a city and you'll see a... yellow arrow I think.

*Available after researching Bronze Working

Sometimes it's worth growing into unhappiness to whip a really expensive building (like a university).

If you aren't running slavery and are using caste system stunt the growth by running specialists.

That's very important, have loads of specialists or you really shouldn't be in Caste System.

You will find the whip icon to the right of the build menu in the city screen, it is in the 2nd row of buttons from the top, and its the left one.

Hi All,
tried a few things already and learned a lot! Still one problem remains...I can't whip the citizens... No button in the city screen to do so, while I do have installed the Slavery civic. It's Civ IV Warlords, does that make any difference?
thanx!

It's the icon that looks like an arrow pointing upwards. You probably haven't got enough population to whip (you can only whip half the population of a city). Hover over the arrow to see how many pop points you need.
