Strange Loss

I was playing as the Dutch at Prince level on normal speed with a fractal standard size map.

I found myself on a continent with the Holy Roman Empire, and the other continent had all of the other civilizations on it. Everything was progressing nicely, and I felt that I was in a really great position to win this game.

After researching optics so that I could find the rest of the civs, I decided to research up to the point where I could pound out some Calvary and take out the HRE and have the continent all to my self. Which is exactly what I did.

After completing my conquest, I checked the victory conditions screen and discovered that I had already lost to Washington, who won with a religious vote.

I don't even remember seeing a pop up saying that he won, but perhaps I just wasn't playing close enough attention.

Anyhow, I wasn't happy with that, and was wondering what would be the best course of action to prevent this from happening again. I had noticed that most of the civs on that continent shared a common religion, but I didn't think a winner would be voted for behind my back.

Anyway... What do you think?

basicly what went wrong was that you failed to notice that the AP was built, that you got a single city with the religion (else noone can get declared Religius winner) and/or that you failed to notice what the vote was about and/or failing to spread the AP religion enough on your own landmass (maybe even changing to it) to have enough weight to stop it

Hmm... I can get pretty tunnel visioned sometimes. I for sure didn't notice any elections for religious winner though; I thought I would have. So if I don't have the AP religion in any of my cities, I can't stealth lose?

Nope - the AP religion has to be present in every civ in at least one city.
If it isn't, the AP victory is not possible.

So if you only have it in one crappy city and even building missionaries seems too expensive - just gift that city to your nearest neighbour. ;)

Are you even sure you really lost?
Or has Washington maybe just been elected ruler of the Apostolic Palace?
(That's not the same as Religious Leader.)

I went to the victory screen and all it showed was a victory by Washington, so I'm pretty sure I lost.

I believe what happened was one of Charlamagna's cities had their religion. If I'd known I could lose that easily, I would have paid more attention and razed it. What I don't understand is this. If all the civs have to have at least the AP religion in one city, then I should have been able to at least vote for the winner, correct? I'm 99.9% sure I didn't see any victory vote. I couldn't even find in the replay where it said Washington won either and I thought it would have been pretty easy to find. Maybe it was just bugged, but probably I'm just going insane. :crazyeye:

maybe the vote occurred, then you captured the HRE city on the same turn/next turn, then you lost. If thats what did happen then that is really really unlucky. But yea, next time raze it.

What? If you don't have a city with the religion of the AP the vote shouldn't be possible to start with.

Ok. I just got home and started the game. I went to a save right after I caputured the last city and all the victory conditions were still available. Ended the turn and still good. Ended the turn still good. Ended that turn and *BAM* Washington has won.

I took the save right after Washington won.

Looking at the game. I see that one of the last cities I took did have the AP religion, but I sure don't remember seeing a victory election pop up, and I feel certain I would have noticed that.

May I suggest then for you to go back and burn said city? That should stop the vote at least for the time being.

<Washington has won a Diplomatic Victory!>
McDaddy: Wait, what?
Washington: WOOT
Charlemagne: ROFL PWNED

Not sure if this is how it works but wouldnt it in theory be possible that human capture city with AP religion in it and its now spread to the entire world. Human press next turn AI 1 play its turn and calls for a diplomatic victory vote since all civilizations now got the religion but than its AI 2 turn who now take the city back resulting in the human having no city with the AP religion rest of the AI play there turns its back to the human who arent allowd to vote since he got no city with the religion anymore. Result AI win the diplo vote without the human being allowd to vote.

Well I don't believe that I actually lost now. I started a new game last night and build the AP myself. When I finally spread the AP religion to final civ, my victory screen changed to show only the AP victory screen with no other information. I clearly haven't won the game and I've lost a couple of victory votes (though I was the leading vote getter).

I think it must be the "Buffy" mod doing something strange on my machine. I just started using it and so am not real familiar with all of its ins and outs. Also I've only been playing civ iv for a few weeks.

I played the save and Washington didn't win. Nor Roosevelt, as Washington is not in the game. I played for a few turns until i got a prompt to vote to return a city to someone overseas. Replayed a few more times, got a vote for victory, but america wasn't involved in that either. Also, the city with the AP religion was captured in 1645 and it's now 1730, so any victory would require you voting (or choosing to abstain).

Thanks for going through that for me Naterator. Sounds like I was just really confused.:crazyeye: I'm still not sure why my victory screen only showed the AP victory screen instead of all of the options unless it is just a bug as I said before.

I'll probably go back and play the game to completion when I get a chance.

Yes.
There is a Buffy bug that when you open the diplomatic screen, F8 gets stuck there.
