Does anybody prefer strategic view? please try it before you vote :D it was missing in civ4

I spend most of the game in Strategic view. When I remember there is another way to see my empire I get a beautiful look at what I've been working on for the last x hours.

I rarely use it.

I didn't pay $50 to play a more complex version of Settlers of Cataan

What a coincidence, neither did I. Good thing this isn't even close to being Settlers of Catan. I bet if it was squares or octagons nobody would even mention it.

I find it bafflingly ugly, and hard to work out what the hell is going on. I was looking forward to it, since my computer barely runs the main graphics (why oh why do they make the graphics so intensive? It looks no better than Civ4, but my comp runs Civ4 smoothly at full settings).

Why can't they make it just a basic view in 2d, like an old Civ, instead of having little round logos for everything?

Do you have High Detail Strategic view enabled? I find it very aesthetically pleasing, almost like looking at stained glass, but not quite. Try using it for the first 50-100 turns exclusively. I assure you, it becomes a lot easier to figure out that way and afterward you can hit F10 and tell at a glance what is going on.

I typically stay in the main screen, but when I have to do some serious troop movement I switch to strategic view and set icon mode to Units. This is a real time-saver when you have to reposition large numbers of troops to another front after a successful campaign.

It is also slightly (and I use that word deliberately) easier to spot which tiles have roads vs. railroads.

I wouldn't go as far as saying I prefer strategic though.

I've tried it with and without, and can't say I've noticed it looking any different.

It took me a while to get used to strategic view but now I use it 98% of the time. The only time I don't is when one of my units gets stuck in a city (bug?), and clicking on it won't let me select it. I have to switch to 3D in order to get it out.

I was never a big fan of 3D since civ4 because to me civilization wasn't all about graphics. I can't imagine playing Risk with my head 1ft away from the board ; I need a broader view of the board without any wacky perspectives warping the positions and 2d accomplishes that. For me everything is so much more comprehensible in 2d.

I really enjoy the "Strategic View". It's very light on the GPU. The art style is nice to look at, and the overlays are very useful.

yeah this seems to be bugged. one thing that you can do though is zoom all the way in, then try to select it. zooming with mouse-wheel has let me select units in strategic view when trying to select them at a reasonable zoom level has not.

My PC is under spec and I'm very happy I can play the game at all. The only time it crashes is when it leaves the strategic view. You can guess how often I use that view.

I spend like 10-20 turns before switching to strategic view and that's where I'm at for the rest of the game. I love the strategic view, and I wish they'd made a Lite version of the game with the strategic view only, kinda like hearkening back to the first Civ. Especially since the 3D graphics aren't any better than Civ IV (at lowest settings), and still run slower than any other game I've seen on this system.

...I will say this, it's great in between turns on my ancient (read: 2 year old) laptop, especially on large maps. I've sworn off huge until my new machine later this month. :D But strategic view doesn't have all the same info I'm used to having on-screen, like city production or growth, etc. And it's not as pretty.

I don't prefer it, but I use it to find strategic resources when they become available.

I find that sometimes strategic resources are hard to see if they're at the edge of your vision/fog of war.

I hate it. I use the regular view with resource pop-ups and such. I only wish there was something that would pop-up a little icon for ruins (hard to see a ruin in a jungle).

I switch it on and off. It makes management so much easier, like I know where my roads exactly are and the mess is all gone. However, I can't click on military units in cities and I have a computer that can run the game on high graphics so I don't play purely on strategic view.

I've tried it with and without, and can't say I've noticed it looking any different.

High Detail Strategic View allows you to zoom in closer, which is a useless feature if you're going to be playing on strategic view.

I got a awesome computer, easy to play highest gfx and SC2 and watch hulu all at once.
But i play in F10 just so i can skip the dang battle animations and the SLOW ass sliding that it does.
