Hi there, long time lurker. I was wondering if anyone could point me to an article about tips for playing multiplayer games. I am currently in a Pitboss game and it just seems every article seems to be about vs AI and not other people. Playing against people seems a lot tougher than the AI and completely different. I was just wondering of what kind of opening and strategies are viable in multiplayer and what aren't that may be considered popular in single player.

Most MP games rely more on chocking and early rushes.

But the biggest determining factor in MP is who and how many you're playing.

If there are a lot of players you have to be careful if you spend all your energy for early rush. You may eliminate a player but the other players are now usually ahead of you in tech. It a lot harder to beat a human that is technically superior to you than when it's an AI.

IF it's a duel, you can count on an early rush. As long as the map isn't large, they rarely last long.

And what type of players are you playing against?

If it's a FFA of strangers on one of the gaming servers, people will try to rush and if they fail they will just quit. (the main problem with playing with strangers)

If it's a group of friends the opening may be a bit more peaceful. And maybe you can build worker first.

As in most games, know your enemy. A lot harder when it's a human.

not much MP strategy talk in this particular forum. There is an MP forum here though that you could try.

rah brings up good point that it depends on what type of MP you are playing. I was never into MP and only messed around with it some years ago on the servers, and played a tiny bit of pitboss. Playing on the servers is riddled with trolls, kids and elitists..at least it was. I did not find it fun and as rah mention, guys will quit games fast.

Pitboss though is often a different animal if among friends. Usually there is a set of rules in place so that is something to keep in mind. Rules such as no tech trading (usually standard) and an enforced peace for set number of turns at the start. If that's the case, then some SP strategies are still beneficial and improving your SP skills is still a very good idea.

Anyway, I would check the MP forum out and see if you can find folks to discuss this with, and you might find some friendly games to join. No idea how active it is over there now.
