Strategy for Pangaea?

Currently I mostly run a 5-7 man FFA on Pangaea. We turn off Barbarians, Tech Trading and the Time/Space Race win conditions. I've tried multiple strategies but mostly end up expanding into a huge economical powerhouse but then my military war-engine is slow to start up and the game drags on forever.

Does anyone have any good tips, like which leader I should take, which early techs and a build order? I'm fairly new to the game but I'm just looking for an edge on this map. Also, I employ the Blazing!! turn timer and Quick gameplay but is there any other options that make the game go faster? It takes an hour for the smallest of combat skirmishes to start in my games.

Also, what does chop/whip mean? I've seen it a lot.

Chopp = chopping down forests to speed up production in your city (req bronze working)
Whip = the civic Slavery, you can sacrifice population in order to complete buildings/units. Very helpful, esp on the higher levels.

Standard gameplay speed would probably help if military action is your goal. Fewer turns mean fewer movements for units means that if you do build up a military they may be outdated by the time they get to your enemies cities and almost certainly after you finish taking out one opponent. Conversely, the slower speeds offer a distinct advantage to the warmongering player.

I would advice to play normal, but with tech trading, which would make the game move with the same speed as in quick w/o techs - this would make your military be current longer. If you want to play military, aggressive is an excellent trait (Vanilla). Peaceful - +2 cultural bonus is nice.

Alright, now I know how to implement the Slavery civic but is there a button I press to sacrifice my population to make something go faster?

Also, I'm very noobish to this game and noticed something I somehow missed in the tutorial and all that. It was my belief that building farms/cottages automatically reaped in extra resources but had no idea citizens had to "work the tile" or anything like that. I massed farms and improvements on all my tiles and it seems for no reason.

Also, what can you suggest to upgrade first? Bronze working seems popular but I've seen some guides mention things like grabbing Hinduism first and spreading it. I've become familiar with a culture bomb (actually did it once on my own before reading about it, hehe) and that's cool too, any specific way to ensure you get a great artist like Homer?

First off, I'd leave all those other conditions on. Barbarians help you learn not to shirk building up your defenses, tech trading helps you learn the value of cultivating friendships, and all victory conditions should be eligible to help you learn how to not only go after a victory condition on your own, but to stop others from achieving theirs as well. I feel you're denying yourself some good learning opportunities.

it sounds like he is playing a MP game. So your points arent exactly valid - you dont need to switch religions to maintain positive relations or whatnot in multiplayer - and he doesnt need the barbarians to teach him the importance of defense, the other players will teach him that!
