Stupid question.. when does a town become a city?

Heh, I can't believe I can't find this in any of the FAQs or reference materials. I know if I was at home I could find it instantly in the manual, but I'm at work. =/

So my question is: Does a town become a city at pop 6 or pop 7? Also, do you get the defensive bonus at 6 or 7 pop?

City size increases at 7 (the image on the screen gets bigger) and you gain a small bonus to units in the city. I guess you can say it moves from "town" to "city" at that point. The next size increase is at 13, when it gets bigger on the screen again, and becomes a "metropolis." I am not certain if the defensive bonus goes up again. Usually, when I am bombarding the snot out of a city, I like to get it to size 6 or below so it loses its defensive bonus.

I wasn't sure about the defense bonus because I thought the city walls disappear at size 6, but I could be wrong.

Walls don't "disappear" at size seven, they become meaningless, as the size seven city already confers a 50% defensive bonus.

Well, the city is no longer shown as a city with a wall around it. That's what I meant by disappears.

Yes, the walls disappear at size 7 but if that city ever drops down to size 6 or less again they will reappear.

When the city reaches size 7, garrisoned units get +50% defense. When it reaches 13, they get +100% defense. If the city is size 6 and lower, garrisoned units get no extra defense.

Hmm. Obviously I don't build walls much. Does this mean that you stop paying upkeep on the walls (do they even have upkeep? They should!) when you grow to size 7?
