I just fired up Civ III again after about a year's hiatus. I've got the old MacSoft edition. Doing some reading I saw the new "Complete" version is available.
Is this worth picking up? All the expansions look great! Is there an "unofficial" editor as there was for the older version available?

Civ3Complete is definitely worth buying, far more so than Civ4, which is still in what I would call the beta stage. There is no editor with the Civ3Complete version, but the editor with your Macsoft disc will work with the new version, as I have the MacSoft version, and have been using it for maps and custom scenarios. You just will not be able to use the new resources, civs, and units in the editor. But it is definitely worth the money.
If you ever plan to play the Civ3 GOTM competition, you'll need Civ3 Complete. Vanilla will shortly be removed from the list of supported formats. The only options will be PtW for Classic GOTMs, and C3C for COTMs. We already support only C3C in the SGOTM competitions.
These changes are prompted, at least in part, by the arrival of Civ3 Complete for Mac OS, which means there is now no community which can only play vanilla.

The final vanilla GOTM will be the September 15 one, as announced here last week.
Vanilla GOTMs have been playable on a Mac for well over three years. The participation by Mac players was never high, but has now dropped to vanishing point. The only real reason for supporting vanilla has been the lack of the other versions for Mac players, and with the arrival of Civ3 Complete that reason died over six months ago.
I'm sorry this decision is bad news for a few "hidden" players, but I'm afraid the old saying applies - "Use it or lose it".
I was on vacation last week and haven't caught up on what's been happening.
It is a sound decision even though it is disappointing for guys like me. Even with those massive salaries you guys get, you can't be expected keep everyone happy.
Oh well....I have all the GOTM saves. I can content myself with them until I get my ol' Beige G3 to a point where I can buy and play C3C.
