Do people use Partisans here? if so, why dont you use Alpine Troops instead?

Welcome to Civ Fanatics Dark Cid. :)

I don't know about others, but I don't really use either one.

I usually stop at Riflemen, since combat is not a major part of my game at that late stage and that is what the earlier units are upgraded to with Leo's Workshop.

Partisans have the advantage of ignoring zones of control as well as the special movement that Alpine troops get. They both cost 50 shields, so the trade off is losing one Def and Attack point for being able to ignore zones of control.

If you used Alpine troops in conjuction with diplomats (or spies) you could do basically the same thing. Although the dips wouldn't be able to keep the same pace as the alpine troops in rough terrain.

I guess it would matter if you are going to be trying to advance through the enemies lines and still be able to defend yourself or just hold your position against attack.

At any case, both will work against the AI with no real problems. ;)

Partisans, altho weaker than alpine troops, ignore ZOC - you can run around pillaging as you see fit. Also, they have a x8  attack bonus against units with an attack of zero. In other words, engineers, freight, settlers, etc, have absolutely no chance against them. Not only can you pillage, but you can easily kill off those units who can repair the damage.

Although i infrequently build them, I do use Partisans whenever I can. They are cheaper and just about as good as Alpine Troops. I usually use AT for city defense whereas I will send out Partisans for missions.

This is an example of how I use them. One game I was fighting the Celts. I landed a large invasion force which got mostly destryoed, but I did manage to take Cardiff. However, they quickly retook it, giving me about 9 Partisans. They recaptured the city for me again and then the reminaing 7 (2 for temporary defense) pillaged important resources and provided an excellent fortified stopgap to slaughter reionforcements.

Yes, there are better units to do it. Bit Partisans can get you out of a jam. Stick one on a Mountain and you'd be very unlucky to lose.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

I don't often use either, If I have partisans it is because one of my cities has been taken, or I have bribed a barb. Occasionally i build Alpine troops though I'm really not sure why. I think it's because the look good.

Its a stupid answer...Not really

It depends what situation is. They are useful if you lose a city and need to take it back but otherwise its probably best to build tanks and howitzers etc instead.

Sure it is easier to build Armor, Howitzers etc, but if you want a good old fashioned spanner in the works then Partisans are hard to passup for defense, movement and cost :rocket:

The partisan does ignore zones of control.

Thats not really that useful though...If you are attacking someone then you hope that you have enough military to go through them instead of having to sneak round them.

Don't really use Partisans; spies are more efficient for infiltration tactics. Partisans seem best for pillaging opposing civilizations; and since I'm going to conquer these anyways, I find pillaging enemy civs counterproductive -- though at times when I'm feeling particularly malicious toward an AI civ, I will pillage mercilessly.

As for Alpine Troops, I previously did not use them all that much, since traditionally I don't shift into large-scale military operations until I have Armor and my Howies. However, in recent Succession games, I've discovered that a balanced combination of Alpine Troops, Cavalry, Artillery, Engineers, and Spies make for an efficient attacking force capable of sustaining a "blitzkrieg" in the pre-Automobile/Mobile Warfare stage of the game.

I would only use Alphine troops for quick movement a sort of a defence after a tank capture of a city before Mech Infant.

I would only use partisans when I have just lost city, I would use it to get back the city and to defence it after its capture!

Partisans are good, but i don't use them.
Them or Alpine troops
damn, i was gonna post something good, but i forgot what it was! bah
