Sudden login popup while browsing

This is to report and give proof of a popup I somethimes experience when I browse CFC fora. I have no clue as to why it pops up, and it does not seem to do so on a regular basis.

It cannot be an internet connection popup - as I connect via LAN/router->broadband, and never have to input username/password for my internet sessions.

I have also ended browsing some threads in a 404 page not found, and sometimes when I enter civfanatics.com there is the "takeoverad" by UGO.

The other day I also got a 404 from telefragged when I was checking news on a newspaper site (www.aftenposten.no) that is not related to telefragged in any way.

there is a popup on entry to the main civfanatics page IIRC, so that's not unusual.

It does look suspicious though. Do you have a firewall or something? There are programs out there that stop popups, but i'd suggest getting a trustworthy firewall that can do it for you. This may or may not solve your problem, but as the popup you had there had "OpenAdStream" in there, it's certainly not something you'd want. Looks like windows is picking it up for you though.

EDIT: might also be a shifty program on your computer...

Looks like you have have an advertising parasite that your firewall is intercepting.

I, too, have had occassional pop-ups while browsing the forum. They get smacked down pretty quickly - I'll try disabling the pop-up blocker and try to snag one.

(Seems to have been in the last 2-3 weeks only, I think)

I run 3 firewalls iirc: one installed on the LAN i connect to the internet through, one antivirus-software firewall, and of course the WinXP firewall. I ran an ad blocker yesterday, and it killed 400+ ads in just a few hours.

Oh..got this popup at another place yesterday too - was at www.dinside.no and got something similar (not the open adstream yaddayadda, but otherwise) I ve set my browser to let me select which cookies to accept - and I blocked a cookie for the webadress (think it was no.kelkoo.com) that was written on the popup ("Open no.kelkoo.com"...)

none of those firewalls are likely to stop popups. If you're using an ad blocker, make sure it's one you can trust - that is reputable, otherwise you might be getting into more trouble
I've just started using one called outpost on my new computer and it blocks ads and popups, quite nice.

yeah that's all well and good (cookies shouldn't be able to damage your system, and if you've got an up-to-date patch of IE or whatever browser you use, any cookies are safe...until microsoft release their next bug-find), and blocking cookies is fine, but for a long term solution where you don't have to block individual cookies, i'd get a firewall (or make sure your ad-blocker is safe, just do a quick google on it and make sure no-one is saying nasty things about it)

I've gotten pop-ups from both at work (no AOL) and home, with road runner.

Absolutely not, under no circumstances whatsoever, am I with AOL. I would rather gargle broken glass. They have to be one of the worst, if not the absolute worst, company I've ever, ever, had the misfortune to deal with.........[/rant]

And yes, that's on the fora. I almost never even visit the main page these days.

Computer and informatic are my weakness, but i had some strange lag recently while playing TFC ( Shooter), so i run Ad-Aware and i had 8 spyware, i remove them with Ad-aware.

I did a windows up-date ( 98 second edition) and explorer up-date. My security is still middle but now explorer is automaticaly blocking a cookie from CFC, so i guess there is some spyware going on here. I dont mean a soft cookie but true invasion spyware.

So i suggest to everyone to up-date window and explorer, run Ad-Aware to remove existing spyware.

Since then i have no more problem, but i am realy weak in computer so i hope i am right, so far so good.
