I just won my first game with a Space victory in 1973, a Cheiftain huge continents one. Anyway, for my next one I wanted to try a different map type, as I had tried continents a few times.
There is quite a few though so I don't know which to choose. Could anyone suggest a map type they like?

I like great plains but its a bit broken, you can get some really production heavy cities in the centre. this lets you produce tons of units and go for one of the millitary victories

I play a lot of Fractal maps. They vary a lot so you never know exactly what you'll get.

Or you could try the tectonics map - they look cool and are more realistic. You need patch 3.17 for it, though AFAIK.

Big and Small, snakey, continents, huge map, lslands mixed in, islands (rather than continents), low sea level, 14 to 18 civs. Love those settings - multiple contintental power blocks that aren't kept apart until astronomy in every game.

i agree with shafter. i always play those settings. 18 players. i like the globe maps cause its more realistic. fractal is good too.

I have a different problem, i've played every map so much i'm getting bored of the one's i consider as "fun" (ie maps with lots of water, islands, continents and exploring) Lately i've been playing around with maps like Hub. I want to try Maze but whenever i load it, half the map is in the arctic. Any way around this?

I've gotten some really neat maps off Tectonics, but some real duds to - best to check WB before start to make sure it's going to be fun/playable.

Great Plains is fun - sorta like an old tabletop wargame where you start on one side and push your way across; only enable Conquest for a good time, but be aware that this will take AWHILE on Marathon/Huge. As stated above, this map type is a bit broken. With 18 Civs at least 4 will die to Barbs (you want the GW here) which will leave alot of room for expansion which raises the spectre of a runaway AI, but more likely, a bunch of punch-drunk AIs with crashed economies. Play a level of difficulty above yourself on this map.

Inland Sea has been fun in the past; it's a nice mix of water/land and the diplomatic game is key.

Try Archipelago, Snaky Continents, Low Water, Huge. About half the time you'll get awesome maps that can put Fractal to shame.

Tectonics

Wet

I prefer large map with 6 opponents, or huge with 8 opponents. this guarentees no early rush and secures everyone viable starts most of the time. also, it lets all the AI's get big empires which i really like.

i like tectonics the best because of the mountain ranges and resource balance. since i learned about the "Wet" option in humidity - i found many vales of grasslands instead of tundra and desert.

Everyone HAS to play at least one game on the Fantasy Land (toroidal with everything as crazy as it can get). Love it or hate it, you gotta play one.

Fractal and Terra maps are my favourite. Fractal is good for the randomness and the fact that there is usually a civ isolated somewhere, ripe for the picking. Terra is good for an Earthy type map, where you want a more 'realistic' type of game. I like to colonize new lands.

I agree Archipelago is a lot of fun, with economics, military, and diplomatic possibilities. But I cheat and play the Vikings. I also like Terra (action in both the old and new worlds) and Lakes.

Tectonics, RevolutionDCM mod, 20 civs, best, settings, ever!
