Swamp People

...so you might say you were swamped :D

Not just no defensive bonuses, there's an additional defensive penalty to be in a Marsh. I had a good game with the Dutch where I settled a city close to an opponent, bought the 4 or 5 Marsh tiles that his city wouldn't expand into (you have to buy those tiles because your city won't expand into them either), and then had an excellent defensive buffer when the inevitable DoW came.

Well, that's the defensive penalty to being in any flat terrain (marshes, but also flat grasslands, plains, etc.).

Too bad there aren't any special units or promotions that increase your movement in marshes. (Whereas there are effects for forests, jungles, and hills).

Pretty sure units sitting on marsh tiles still get a -15% combat penalty (same as tiles with fallout, IIRC), while open terrain is just -10%.

Use scouts and send them out to explore. Scouts move twice in most land terrain tiles including swamp. Research masonry which allows you to clear swamps or marshes.

Wait, open terrain is a penalty? What is unmodified 0% then?

Sorry, my response was confusing. -10% on flat land was only in vanilla. In G&K and BNW, flat land is 0%.

For what it's worth, flood plains and oasis get -10% defense. No telling why.

Wet sand is hard to get good defensive footing in? That's my completely out-of-right-field guess.
