Started a game and spawned in the middle of ~20 marshes. Is this, I don't even know, what is this?

P.S. No the Dutch either...

Ha! Last time out, I started in hills. Nothing but $&@#% hills. I even scouted out to about ten hexes and finally found...

...a mountain.

SCREENSHOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please screenshotttttttt!

Don't think this was directed at me, but standard and 5bil years. Should be nothing but grass, right? Not the Himalayas.

With the 5 Billion Year setting, most of what would have been mountains would be weathered down to hills (think old Appalachians vs. young Rockies).

Hey, that's -15% defense for attacking armies, what are you complaining about? Just build a lot of archers - yeah, might take a while which a ~3 pop city on turn 100 - and enjoy being undefeatable. No army is ever going to be able to marsh into your city!

Damn, I hope that pun makes sense.

What a totally OP start! Such luck! Except for the Netherlands, marshes are the optimal tile for planting GP!

Figured it out. Set the world to wet instead of young...
:wallbash:

Nope, planting a GP in a Marsh doesn't clear the Marsh. It will still be only one food. Planting a GP in a Forest or Jungle will clear the Forest or Jungle though, which gives you a quick way to get Coal online if the Coal is found in a Jungle.

Not true. The marsh is cleared and you get 2 food. You need to have researched Masonry to plant a GP on a marsh tile.

I've definitely seen differently, but that was some time ago (in G&K IIRC). Has it been patched at one point?

I've been playing the Dutch a lot in my last games, 20 marshes sounds great then - too bad each time I only got four-five marsh tiles at most. Not so great luck, I guess.

Yeah. Polders in marshes can be incredibly strong defensively once you have built roads in them. They are half (or a third) movement cost to you, but a whopping 3 movement for other civs - equivalent to a hill with forest/jungle but is still flat terrain (so no defensive bonuses). Stops enemy troops cold in terms of movement, and leaves them extremely vulnerable to attack.

Not just no defensive bonuses, there's an additional defensive penalty to be in a Marsh. I had a good game with the Dutch where I settled a city close to an opponent, bought the 4 or 5 Marsh tiles that his city wouldn't expand into (you have to buy those tiles because your city won't expand into them either), and then had an excellent defensive buffer when the inevitable DoW came.

If you take Netherlands do you have more chance to get marshes?

Nope. But the AI doesn't settle near Marshes or expand their borders into them, so if there are Marshes, there's often space to settle close to them later in the game.
