It's not something very difficult to do.
But I just can't bare this horrible shield anymore.

Now, I'll just wait for the SDK and then remove the shoulders :)

PS : You need to rename the file into swordsman_128

I like it ;)

Did you also reduce his defence appropriately?

J/k ;)

How did you do it, was it with a hex editor?
I tried one of those but all I was getting were CTD's whenever I tried to change the models, finally I just gave up. I was wondering, would it be possible to remove the whole turret from Mechanized Infantry (i.e. cannon, antenas, rocket launcher and the cabin), or maybe from modern armor?

Hi Para B,

Nice work! Can you explain how to remove the shield though? I used your .dds, but the shield still shows up in game. I am trying to figure out how you got rid of it. Thanks for any tips!

Hi
Did you rename the dds into swordsman_128 ?
Make sure you copy the file in _Civ4CustomAssets\art\units\swordsman

Removing the shield or the weapons is very simple.
You just have to use the alpha layer and mask the shield in black.

In Civ4 games the pieces of weapons or shields that are in black in the alpha layer will appear transparent.
But the pieces of body or armor (like the big shoulders) will appear in teamcolors or white. That's why we can remove the shield or the sword, but not the shoulders.
You can also remove the club of the warrior easily with this method.

C.Roland explained this here.

Ah, thanks - yes, I had been messing around with the .dds and lost the alpha channel. Got it fixed and its working now. Thanks!! :goodjob:

You can also use the attached Swordsman_fx.nif to get rid of the shield. This actually removes the shield from the model and should be a little more processor friendly than masking it. But either way accomplishes the same goal.

@Kael: How was the shield removed?

I used a hex editor (Ultraedit), found the shield section and clipped it.

A new version, with a bronze armor.

Now find the shoulders plate !! ;)

I thought it should be possible to hex edit the units. What else can you do with hex editing? I know for FreedomForce there was a huge business in hex editing in which dramatic changes were made to models including adding weapons, changing body shapes, and various other modifications that led to almost endless characters based solely on a small number of basic models. Is that possible with CIV.

Yeah, check out the linked picture. I used hex editing to add fire to the demon in the lower right, the leaf halo to the priest in the mid left and to take away the sheild from the copper golem. I have also used it to take the club away from the warrior and to make most of my spell effect (fireballs, glowing root spell, etc).

In warcraft 3 we can with an hexadecimal editor change the base material of a model. In civ 4 the majority of the model are white or in team color, maybe we can make them transparent with hexaediting, in warcraft 3 we can remove teamcolor with hexediting. If we can, we willbe able to remove the shoulder of the swormand with alpha channel.
