SysNES 1: A Murky Pool of Light

@Shadowbound, that was two errors on my part - firstly that white habitat didn't exist, it was just a left over from a test drawing of the habitats sizes (Barbarian and Pirate bases are light gray, Habs are half white half you colour if they are rioting). Also I misread your orders as 'move guys to Habitat 2 on Kaus II' and was all like 'okay, maybe he's trying to stave off overcrowding or something'.

I will double check all orders in the future ;).

@Seon, well you have a free ship, but everyone else got one or more free bases. Also new players arriving on ships means I don't have to reveal the unexplored stars too quickly. Also on that note there is still an open player slot if any lurkers are interested.

@Immaculate: yes, yes if you move 1 population to the newly built Alpha (costs 2e), no, yes if you have the e.

@Seon, thats the same question Immaculate asked, and the answer is yes.

Can I build an Alpha Habitat on a planet and upgrade it to Beta simultaneously?

Kation Ship Design

Kation Ships follow on from the Individualistic streak that all Kations have. Generally this manifests itself in the Ships captains particular obsessions, streaks of red paint over a metallic grey finish, flatfish type designs with incredibly low profiles and huge hulking whales that are extremely organic in nature.

However, This diverges quite significantly in the case of the military as the military would not be able to function if every ship captain was able to dictate a personnel design according to his or her tastes. Thus in general the Kation military vessels favour a squashed sphere or series of squashed spheres appearance, thus minimising the cross sectional area in the x and y axis, and maximising the area in the z axis. The large xy plane area is used for coolant systems for the weaponry placed on board the Kation ships. The near spherical shapes are used to minimise cross-sectional area in two planes[1] whilst maximising the volume that could be got out of the material. Most crew critical components are placed in the centre of the spacecraft, with less critical equipment placed radially outward.

[1] Thruster use generally makes this quite easy to account for, just as an OOC comment, see all those star wars fighter dogfights? If a fighter is on your tail, you fire thrusters and shoot, problem solved....*sigh* never mind the whole fighter thing, the ships here are much larger and take a bit longer to turn but the point stands.

'Als ships are typically formed from gently curving surfaces. The 'ventral surface' and 'dorsal surface' of the ships are typically composed of gentle convex and concave curves the points of which do not occur in the z-dimension. The x and y dimensions, in contrast often contain pointed tips and make extensive use of concave curves. The 'als, despite what appears to be limited social interaction to outsiders and machine-like emotional development, are fond of artistic patterns and typically decorate their ships in circuitry-like patterns (which they find both artistic and soothing).

Thrusters, how outlandish an idea! (If I might direct you to the last item on the current components list...)

Both those design styles sound good Kal and Shadow, were these what you were envisioning?

Alright immaculate, its rather hard to convay black and flat in brightly coloured pixel art you know ;). So i went for flat with an jagged edge (we're seeing it from the top down) instead, like a bizarre fractal shark. Gardener I shrunk and doubled up the rotating ring and made the other sections bigger.

i approve!

So after raging sufficiently at Steve Jobs and some how resisting the urge to through my iMac through a god damn window I have discovered that this wonderful piece of :):):):) cannot run Open Office. Why? Open Office runs on macs with only 10.4 or higher. While I have, you will never guess, 10.3.9

I was hoping I could use either you Dis, or Kal or whoever, to help me design my ships.

there's excel versions available in the thread- thats what i use.

thats fine, Thrusters are just a pet hate of mine that most tv sci-fi never pulls off.

Kation Politics Continued

Kation Politics is based on a Parliamentary structure, with an Upper and Lower House. The Lower House contains the parties and is essentially the driving force for introducing new laws and so forth. The largest party in the lower house is able to form a government with the leader of this party taking the position of the Principal Investigator. General elections take place every 5 years and each planetary habitat will have a number of Members of Parliament somewhat representative of the population of each habitat.

The Upper House is composed of individuals, with party allegiances strictly forbidden, these members are elected to 12 year terms with no chance of re-election. They are meant to base their case for election to the Upper House on areas of expertise, whether it be law, economics or science. This Upper House is then used as form of check on the Lower House, a means of having reason conquer passion. The Upper House elects a single member of the Upper House to the near-powerless position of the Head of State[1], generally based on a respected member or someone who is widely acknowledged to be quite intelligent and also charismatic. This position is held until death or resignation.

The Judicial system is mostly common law, although its not completely independent of the rest of the government quite a few traditional barriers prohibit the other branches of government overstepping their bounds.

The final positions of import is that each planet will have some form of Governor, these Governors are elected by the Members of Parliament of each individual planet. These Governors hold large emergency powers to be used in the case of invasion or planetary crisis and oversee such institutions that require a planetary view (such as large infrastructure projects; avoiding the problem of multiple planning agencies etc)

The Three Major parties are The Biotechnologists, The Cybernetics and The Third Way. The Biotechs are generally more conservative in their economic policies and the Cybernetics offer a more liberal economic policy. Both sharing an almost unparalleled belief in individual freedom which stands to reason considering the genetic make up and historical origin of the Kations. Only The Third Way offers a more authoritarian government, and has led it to be a Third party, sometimes able to upset elections but never able to seriously compete for a majority, it also holds a rather central position on economics.
Kation politics are not just divided by economic and social matters, there is still quite a strong divide between people who think that Cybernetics or Biotechnology offers the best chance to advance their persons, this has led to a rather steady progression in both fields as people are slowly convinced of the benefits of both.

[1] A bit like a well liked King I suppose.... :P

OOC: well that was fun, I got a bit lost there and I can see room for further reform, i.e. when the Kations expand beyond a single system you will get system governors.

Akresian Ship Design

Notice to Ship-Masters: Any act of decorating or heavily modifying a Military vessel is NOT permitted unless given permission by the FLEETCOM or by the Admirality. Please look up Handbook Section D Item 27 for the definition of Heavy Modification and Section E Item 6 for the reasoning against Heavy Modification and decorations.

-Although the Admirality is usually liberal of the ship designs, there are certain specifications to be obeyed by ALL ship builders for military vessels of Akresia.

--Command Bridge must not be visible from outside. Admirality does not tolerate putting officers in dangerous positons simply because of Artistic values.

-- In case of building ships of the size frigate and below and using the principle of centrifugal force to provide artificial gravity, the rotation of the Hull must not cause a visible indication of a Coriolis effect to the crew. In case of large ships, this rule does not apply as Coriolis effect is negligable.

--Critical Systems, such as computer core, generator, and the life support system must be located at the interior of the ship.

Average Akresian Ship:
Spoiler :
omeg_persp.jpg

Moving parts in the center of the ship allow artificial gravity for the comfort of the crew. Most of the essential parts of the ship, such as the Bridge, the Life Support, Power Generator, and the Computer Core are hidden throughout the ship, not visible from the outside. The Akresian ships also do not have many windows, as windows are structural weakness. The front of the ship is comparatively smaller than the rear of the ship. (Imagine 30-60-90 right triangle...), usually stores the most powerful weapons system and extremely sensitive sensors. The rear of the ship houses its communication systems, long distance sensory array, and the engine/drives for the ship.

Sooooo are you saying there that your ships are just like the Earthforce ones, or merely alike in how they have non-toroidal centrifugal sections (which by the way don't work that great in practice unless they're paired as they'll cause the ship overall to rotate)?

For you caption the Omega-class as an average ship, yet then go on to describe features (rear section larger, buried bridge and life support, and all the serious businesses gear on the back) that it lacks...

Also if coriolis effect isn't going to be a factor in these sizes of ship, you can have rotating sections as small as 24 metres across without problems (assuming you only need to generate 0.5g).

Well it depends on how much zero-g deterioration is a problem and how long the ships tours of duty are likely to be. I can definitely see some long haul patrol vessel having a rotating compartment that it derotates during actual engagements.
